Questions about the CF and SD card slots for the Nikon D810

I currently have a Nikon D7000 and a D750 and have been thinking about adding the 810. On my current cameras I use the second card slot for backup. I would like to know if the SD or the CF is the #1 card slot? Can the second card slot be set up as back up like my current cameras?

I have been hoping that Nikon would come out with a D8?? that would have duel SD cards but GAS is getting me.

I may have other questions as this thread expands. Thank you for your help.

Front is SD, the CF is behind as slot 2

I just use the SD slot with a high speed SD card to improve write times.

I have the d810 I use the CF card as my main card in Raw then back up everything with the SD card in JEPG. You can configure it just like your other cameras.

The D810 can be set so which ever card you want is the primary card. The function of each card can be set to do what you wish it to do. If you want it to back up set it to back up. I set primary card to save raw and secondary card to save jpeg.

Actually the SD card is at the back of the camera, and the CF card is towards the front. Not that it really matters at all. : - )

But to answer the OP's question, either card can be set to be the "Primary", and of course the other card is then the "Secondary". The use of the Secondary card is selectable as backup, overflow, or for JPEG when the Primary receives RAW files.

I thought about just using the SD but have thought about getting a 128 g card and leaving it in the camera for backing up everything then changing it out when full and putting it away in case of problems. I would then erase the primary card after downloading to the computer and back up hard drives. I currently erase both cards after I have downloaded them to the computer and back up hard drives. This would give me another way to back up photos.

Thank you for taking the time to share your method. I appreciate it.

I originally did the same thing of RAW and JPEG and not understanding RAW at the time deleted some and kept the JPEG's. I now know that was wrong and use both cards RAW with the second card being back up in case the first fails. I am now thinking about buying a 128 or 256 and leaving it in for total back up and erasing the smaller card after download to give myself another method for back up.

Thank you for taking the time to answer and sharing your method. I do appreciate it.

You can set up which slot is #1 and which is #2 and designate the usage in the menu of the camera
