I have been out of main stream photography for too long . I went to SFCC for my commercial photography degree 1979 to 1982 , when it was considered one of top 10 programs in California . Worked as a medical photographer , then took over photo dept. on SF Presidio. Then Oakland army base ... I got to learn how to use the first real digital cameras on the market .. a Kodak NIKON camera cost $20,000 { only came with a 50mm lens .}. ..it was a real learning adventure .. only had Kodak for info .. we were the first to experiment with this new technology . Kodak and Nikon had few answers .NOW , my $100 cell phone takes better shots . So , now , its time to get back in the game . I am looking at getting a camera with two lens . wide to normal , and long telephoto lens . camera must allow me to be able to manually focus , as needed . OKAY should I get the Canon EOS rebel T6 or the Nikon D3400 , both offer package deals with 18mm-55mm and 70mm to 300mm lens .. I have seen them priced fairly close in price Canon $50 to $120 dollars less than the Nikon .. would like to hear from users of both .. not the opinion of dealer , trying to sale me his choice .. thanks I have a brand new in the box PENTAX 67 paid $1325.00 late 1990s only 1 test roll shot with camera , as it was backup camera , then a month later , we stopped using film cameras .Any one interested ????

Chuck, Flip a coin or it sounds you made your mind up on cost. Both decisions are great. I am a Nikon guy so, I would say go Nikon

Both are great cameras, I am partial to Nikon. You'll do fine to start with the 18-55 kit lens, and the 70-300 has got a nice long reach in DX.

Not to confuse the issue, but restarting in Digital, you should really consider a mirrorless option like Sony or Fuji.

I use an older version of the Canon T6, a Canon T3i so therein lies my preference but truth be told both are fine cameras. I'm not an expert on lenses by any means but I've read somewhere or other that the kit lenses for the Canon are a tad better than the Nikon. You may want to check comparisons before you decide. At some point you'll want to upgrade lenses anyway.

It's not all just Canon and Nikon. There are some great mirrorless camera options out there as well. Worth looking into. Olympus, Fuji, Panasonic, Sony to name a few.

Welcome to the forum. There were some incredible deals on crop sensor cameras in both Canon and Nikon Brands during Black Friday Week. I am a Nikon owner, but not a Canon Basher. Both have excellent models and lenses. Since you have photography experience, and are looking for a camera that is not real expensive, I would recommend a Canon T6i. It is better than a Nikon D3400. IMO. Better yet, a Nikon D5500, or a Canon 80D. You better have a sensor cleaning kit for the Nikon D3400. It won't stay clean too long, especially if you change lenses regularly outdoors. The Sony mirrorless crop sensor are hot sellers, such as the a6000. Good luck.

I am a Canon shooter so favor them. If getting Canon go on step up to the T6i, the T6 is the stripped down entry level version. It has a 17.9 mega pixel sensor vs 24.2 for the T6i and only 9 focus points vs 19.
I cannot give any real world experience as my two bodies are the 6D and 7DmkII. My daughter uses the T2i and it is as good as the T6 from what I can see.
The Canon direct store has the T6i with 18-55 kit lens for $540 right now. Canon back refurbished just the same as they do new-in-box. I got my wife an SX50 refurb and it has been just great for over a year now.

everyone had the Canon package two lens with bag everywhere for $449 last week BestBuy , Walmart , MIKE'S CAMERA , EVEN kohl's had the best deal $449 with $135 in kohl's cash.. Nikon was running $499 up at Mike's .. I used NIKONS at V A hospital , and Canon F1s for 13 years for the US army ..I found the Canons were real work horses ,only had 1 to really break down ..Nikon's tended to need repairing often .. but , that was film not digital...

OK. I'm a long time Canon user. I suggest you consider the following things:

1) The T6 is old Canon technology. I have a Canon T3i, but I wouldn't buy a T6. It is very similar technology and nowhere near the same capability as a Canon T6i, T6s or 80D. The T6 has less capability in many regards than the T3i which was introduced in February 2011.

2) Be careful of the bundled ~ 70 - 300 mm lenses. They need image stabilization (IS in Canon speak, VR in Nikon speak) to be useful. Most of the inexpensive bundles include long zooms without stabilization. The Canon 75 - 300mm lenses are some of Canon's worst lenses, they do not have Image stabilization. The Canon EF 70- 300mm IS is much better. I don't know the Nikon lenses but if it doesn't have VR it may be a problem, do look at that carefully.

3) Although I like Canon in general, if I was starting with no legacy I would choose the D3400 over the T6 package.

4) You may wish to consider some other options that are a little more sophisticated if you want to develop your capabilities in the digital world.

Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Pentax, Sony, and others all have good products, but as a Canon user I would not go with the T6 bundle. Canon yes, just not that specific model.

Good luck.

Chuck, welcome to the Hog!!
Jeez Chuck, here on the Hog, this is a very loaded question so make sure your seat belt is tight! LoL
You used to be a pro, so this should be easy. If you plan get to the higher echelons of photography, just do what I did.
I left the cameras out of the decision process and looked at which brand had the most extensive and versatile system.
Here's what I came up with. Canon had faster lenses and more of them than the competition and always will. It also had printers, inks and papers all designed to work together as a system.
Better to have the system and not need it than to need it and not have it!!
It's why more pros shoot with Canon than ANY other brand.
The camera is whatever you can afford, cameras come and cameras go but the system is for real.
Again, welcome and good luck!!!

The T6 and T2i is a very good comparison unless things like WiFi and NFC are important. Personally I wouldn't buy a T6. T6i, T6s, 80D certainly. Haven't found out how to put an SD card into my T90 yet and get it to work

There's a guy named Steve in Nevada, who used to be be a Canon Tech. He has a shop now and repairs Canon's. He repaired the EEE error in two of my T90's (oxidized shutter magnets - common problem - needed cleaning.) He also installed an external flash Sync in all four of my T90's. At the time, he was about $135 for the CLA (fixes the EEE error) and installs the external sync. I'll ask him about your memory card slot for the T90 next time I talk with him.

Now I know why you got your skivvies in a twist the other day when I unloaded on Canon. Just a brain fart on my part, did not know what your problem was. I had about $8000 in Canon FD gear when Canon f--ked us all with the EOS mount (which we should have seen coming with the T90.)

Sad story except for the part where you stopped shooting one of the most popular medium format camera's in the market. Shoot some MF film and kick digitals FF A__! 120 film is readily available, and so is processing mail in. There is a demand for your 67, although not at the full retail price in the 90's. But the IQ is still better with good 120 film than most digitals can deliver today.

Nice clean 67s metered prism w lens and wood handle are selling from $500 to $800, and are plentiful on eBay, from those people who are not still shooting them for better results and the quality of big film, or the stink of the darkroom.

Lots of hoggers seem to be taking up film and some have contacted me about what MF film camera's I have from time to time.
