I've never had a problem with PayPal. I especially like the "pay later" feature in which the merchant gets paid immediately but the buyer is not charged until 14 days after the purchase. This gives the buyer time to examine the purchase before paying. I've only had to do this once but it was a nice convenience.

I am amazed at the folks here at UHH that don't have Paypal. I wonder if they know how easy it is to set up and use. And realize the convenience of sending money (fee free) to family and friends. All that you need is a bank account to link to your Paypal account and I would presume most on this forum have a bank account.

IMHO it is rather silly to buy and sell without a Paypal account. Receiving payment for a sale is almost instant through Paypal vs waiting for a check or money order to arrive in the mail, driving to the bank to deposit the check and waiting to ensure the check goes through which all happens over 5-7 days unless the check gets lost and then who knows how long.

While I'm sure there are still valid reasons for writing a check or buying a money order, please consider a Paypal account. You will wonder why you didn't jump in a long time ago.

subtouched, I cannot agree with you or I'm doing someting wrong.
I too have had PayPal for many years and any money I've sent to family I get charged a fee everytime.
This includes sending to the grandkids.
Got a sugestion for me?
Dave

Naturally, if I send it to a business then they pay the fees.

You have to click under "pay or send money" and then "send to family or friends". If you click "pay for goods or services" then they attach a fee. I send money frequently to family and I'm not assessed a fee. It's very convenient. Relook at the options.

I use PayPal a lot. If I'm buying something online from a merchant I'm not familiar with, I use PayPal. This way they get payment from PayPal and the merchant doesn't have my credit card number. I strongly suggest using PayPal's advanced security, which is known in security circles as two factor authentication. When you log in to PayPal they send you a text message and you have to enter that in the web page to access your account. This way if someone hacks your password they still can't access your account unless they have your cell phone. It's an extra step but a tremendous improvement in security.

With Paypal you can also move money back and forth between your bank and Paypal. If you don't have any funds in your Paypal account and want to pay for something they will take it directly out of your bank account. I often will pay for goods/services on the Internet via Paypal instead of setting up an account (temporary) with the vender. It's saves me time and I don't have my credit card number spread all over the Internet. I suppose in this case the vendor is paying a fee to Paypal but I am not. I personally have had no problems with either Ebay or Paypal. I have had no problems with my bank accounts that weren't resolved in a timely way. I check my accounts frequently (Paypal, Ebay, bank accounts and credit cards) so I am aware of charges and balances. My husband has had his USAA account compromised several times (resolved satisfactory). Home Depot and Target have fallen prey to card fraud. Fraud happens. Screw ups happen. But going back to check writing, purchasing money orders and monthly statements isn't the answer (for me).

Setting up a Paypal account takes about 10 minutes or less. Then it takes a couple of days for Paypal and your bank to communicate and after that happens your Paypal account is ready to use and it's pretty much seamless and instant. When you send or receive a payment Paypal sends you a notification email. You can check your account activity anytime day or night.

On the sellers side, I fail to see why anyone would want go through a pay system that takes a percentage of their sales. It only raises the price of selling items.

Exactly what do you think happens when a seller accepts a credit card?????
Credit cards take a varying percentage of from 2.6% to 4.8% depending on the card. ALL of that fee comes from the sellers end. It's the cost of doing business and those costs all drive up the price of merchandise.
You say bought bought that defective item from PayPal? That's ridiculous, you bought it from a scam seller who accepted your payment via PayPal. Getting a refund through them is no different than getting a refund from a credit card company, YOU still have to prove the fraud to their satisfaction, the seller still has to have the opportunity to dispute your claim as you could also be the one committing fraud by filing a false claim.
If you want to completely avoid this type of potential issue there is only ONE WAY. Deal face to face in person and pay cash.

If I was selling an item and two people offered to buy at the same time, I would opt for the one that could pay me instantly over the one that wanted to pay me in a week. Wouldn't you? Something to think about.

You know I did that just recently. I bought my granddaughter a Visa gift card and they attached a 6.00 charge (to me) at the time of purchase. I should have looked at the fine print :) Then I mailed it and of course paid postage.

We always send "Toys are Us" gift cards, there's no fee and They're sent free with the Christmas or Birthday card. Of course the card requires a postage stamp.
I know this sounds cheap but we have 31 grandchildren. Problem solved.

I once paid my pet sitters through Paypal and a month later the sitters sent me a bill with late fees for non-payment. I called them and assured them I had paid. They contacted Paypal and were told I hadn't. Since I am a "paper trail" person I had printed the "receipt" and also had my credit card statement. I emailed these to the pet sitters and they contacted Paypal. Several months later Paypal finally admitted their mistake and paid the sitters. The next time I used the pet sitters I paid by check. I know that this is probably a one in a million situation but I will not use Paypal again if I can help it. Once burned.......

Seriously?? By that reasoning then every single bank, store, business and any entity that has financial transactions should be off limits to you as everyone of them has had a "OOPS" moment. Have you locked yourself away in the attic, awaiting the apocalypse? One bad apple.... just saying.

have had pay pal for years knock on wood have never had a problem, strange how many people on a small site have had problems. I here some stories here that was not a pay pal problem. I ounce bought some coins that no one had a clue was not real, china was duplicating quiet a while later I saw E Bay had suspended those crooks. But how could I blame pay pal it wasn't their fault. So I don't buy from china. Firse you need to check out the seller's feedback how many items they have sold and read all neutral/ negative feedback. I like the fast payment transaction. Works for me.

I have a PP account because I occasionally sell coins on eBay and sometimes buy or sell a piece of equipment here. I also have a PP credit card which I use when I'm dubious of the source. PP also gives you points for redeeming things like gift cards.
However, I've been thinking lately that because of all the fees eBay & PP charge, I wonder if I could sell something and ask for an Amazon GC as payment?
Problem is, what security do you have other than the reputation of someone here on UHH?
