The fast shooing speed, greatly improved auto-focus system, and hi iso capabilities of this crop sensor body are amazing. It compliments my D4 very well. It is, in my opinion, the best crop sensor body available. Professional grade top to bottom. The following samples were all shot between iso 8000 and 16000 with a little noise reduction added.

great shots....

I really liked your first video - certainly will view this next one. If you haven't already done so, would like to see how the Bluetooth works. I just bought a smart phone and am a bit clumsy at using it with the 500.

Some observations . Opinions about cameras is like Motor oil looking for an argument and looking for a place to have it ,,,,with that said and done I Own Nikon D500 for a week and I ran it through its paces first photograph hawks And then it was off to photograph something that would be considered very invasive dragonflies in-flight I've been using the D 7100 for three years Many come out not usable because the autofocus got confused with background it was not able to reacquire in time to capture the picture dragonflies where the hardest with d7100 ... with D500 95% of the pictures of the dragonflies came out perfect I appreciate the upgraded autofocus and performance and as for the pictures themselves they are identical to the D 7100 ....... Because I'm using the same glass I think it was a great investment plan to enjoy it for several more years definitely A performance upgrade from a D 7100

Hi Bigjoe, I bought my D500 specifically for BIF and dragonflies in flight but awaiting delivery of my 300mm f4 PF. When you use yours for dragonflies have you set autofocus to erratic and are you using group focus? I would be grateful for any tips you may have. My old Canon 7D mark 11 had quite a detailed menu set up for things that fly erratically, but it seems there is just the one setting for the D500. Thanks a lot.

I agree that those are amazing pictures. Kudos to the photographer and the D500. The guy who complained about his D500 did not give any specifics. I am a Canon guy but the D500 has very impressive stats. But I can get a 7DII for about half the price so I ask what are the differences and are they worth it. I am sure most D500 owners are very happy with their purchase.

Very good review. I have been considering a D500, however, I am holding out for an announcement of the D820/850. If I shot more wildlife or action, I don't think there would be any question. Thanks for your review.

I was thinking of that as well. If the D810 replacement has a 48MP+ sensor and can shoot at 10FPS in crop mode, then you'd pretty much have the same thing as a D500 - with an option for using the full sensor. However, in the mean time it's still just vaporware, so I'm going to enjoy the D500. I can always sell it if something better comes along.

As a side note, I think this sensor done in 48MP FX would be incredible.

I was one of the first to get a D500 from B&H. In the excitement of a new camera I paid for it months before it was released. My D7200 only had a thousand or so clicks. I put the D500 through my own test against my D7200. The new features on the D500 are great but when it came to my bottom line the photos from my D7200 were better.I sent the D500 back hoping may be I just got a dud. I know some of the self appointed experts on this site will rip my opinion but it is what it is. I will wait until the smoke clears and order another D500. I am a loyal nikon user.

I changed from Canon to Olympus a few months ago because the weight of my Canon APS -C stuff was causing me problems when out walking for up to seven hours a day. Although I think my current M43 stuff is the biz, I have been unable to replicate the keeper rate for BIF that my Canon 7D mark 11 gave me. I bought a D500 together with a Nikon 300mm f4 PF and 1.4 TC mark 111 specifically for BIF and dragonflies in flight. The D500 is relatively light and the 300mm PF is lighter than my Olympus 300 f4 PRO or PanaLeica 100 - 400mm. Once the lens arrives I'll give the new set up and good work out and let you know my thoughts as to whether it's worth the considerable difference in price over the 7D mark 11, if you wish. I used to use a Canon 100 - 400mm f4.5/5.6L IS mark 11 and a Canon 300mm f2.8L IS on the 7D mark 11 but this is about the camera not the glass, so I should be able to provide a reasonable assessment. I did actually consider another 7D mark 11 and a Canon 400mm f5.6L lens.

I tried out the d500 yesterday at a Nikon dealership and liked it for the little time I used it. It was remarkable fast but the speed of my d810 is plenty for everything I do. It seemed about the same size as the D810 but noticeably lighter weight. Nothing wrong with it that I noticed, but not worth the extra money over the d7100,or d7200. Leon

I take it you mean that it's not worth the extra money to you as an individual? For me, for instance, it is worth the extra. A slow shooting FF camera is of no value whatsoever to me, but I would never suggest that a D810 is not worth the extra over a D750 because they are not meant to be in direct competition. In the same way the D500 is not in direct competition with the D7100 or D7200. It is, however, in direct competition with the Canon 7D mark 11.

(note that my site is getting slammed ever since this review hit - so it might take a couple tries to get in)

Very good review, Steve! I saw it the other day as I am quite interested in this camera as my next purchase... I am actually torn between the D500 and the D750, but that is a different discussion. 😳
