Doesn't the side the union is on primarily a function of the way the building faces? There isn't much point to flying the flag from the back or side walls where no one will see it, just to have the union on the north or east. The only rule I remember from my Service days is that the union should always be on the left if hanging on a building.

I tried showing my sister and her church pastor this. They display flags from the countries they have missionaries in and put one American flag at each end of the other flags, hanging on the back wall of the church. I feel according to the etiquette, the American flag should be in the center, a bit above the others.
Can someone tell me who is right?

No flag in America may be flown at a level higher than the American Flag
An American flag flown at night should be illuminated
When flying American flag at half-staff, it should FIRST be raised to full staff, then lowered to half
The reverse when lowering.
Many customs and courtesies regarding our flag !
