That is not a bug, that is a feature. You can set it however you want.

I have discarded Windows 10 out of my main office but I have it on my laptop as everything there works as it is supposed too.

Feature????? How in the heck is that a feature....not having a quick way to disconnect a USB device. Oh I get it! its your strange sense of humor.....My bad.

My biggest gripe is when you go to unplug that USB device you plugged in and there is no "safely remove USB device" icon to click on.

It should be there. It defaults as a 'hidden icon' in the tray. If you click the small arrow next to the other icons you should see it, if there is a flash drive plugged in. It's there on both my computers and one other that I use occasionally.

No, I am not kidding.

Windows let you choose and select how to handle removable devices, just like Windows 7 did.

Open control panel (right click on start menu)
Select auto play

Set the darn thing however you want from there.

As to disconnect, on the lower right, same as windows 7, you have a USB icon under the notification area. You disconnect safely from there.

I debated for a long time. Finally upgraded to Win10. I switched back to my Win7pro64 after a couple hours.

Nope Mine's not there. I'm very familiar with how Win 7 handled USB devices. I've enabled the Icon in the notifications area but it still won't work. There are numerous online complaints about the problem.

I do not have windows 10 on this machine so I cannot trouble shoot. Maybe someone else can. You have likely disabled something somewhere.

So far, I've got Win 10 running on 3 very cheap used computers. Just like every other Windows version, you have to learn how to control it and not let it control you.

Apparently the problem you are having isn't just Win10. Here's a "possible" fix for Win 7/8/10

I am curious. If you right click on the device in windows explorer does it give you an 'eject' option? I almost always have win explorer open since it is what I use to transfer and file my photos.

I've tried solution 2 and it work but its a pain in the butt. My work around is to copy the E:\ drive to the desktop and right click on it to eject the drive. BTW, there is no control panel solution for enabling tray notifications you have to right click the system tray and select properties then click customize the notification area.....there is a toggle to show which Icons appear on the taskbar.....mine is toggled on but nothing shows in the system tray.

Yes it does and thats what I have set up to use via placing a copy of the E:\ drive on my desktop. I transfer my files using FastStone it works a bit like the old windows photo viewer in XP whick was dropped when Win 7 was introduced.

It took me well over a week of fine-tuning until I finally got Windows 10 to look and behave the way I want it to. (In my case, similar XP, which I was using right before.) In that regard, Windows 10 is actually very flexible, but many settings adjustments are not particularly easy to locate.

After I updated I realized there was no word Processor. Like windows 7 had.

I've been using Open Office ever since Microsoft started charging for Word. It opens and converts all my old Word files. And it is free:

Edit: I corrected the URL.

Nonsense. It is seriously flawed. Every time it wakes from sleep it loses its wifi connection. It takes umpteen attempts to restore. Mail app has no features, Edge full of ads, the list goes on. Reverted back to 8.1 and no more of these problems.
