I agree with the Hurricane/St George area of Utah- only 2 hours away

Hoover Dam is a must-see now that the generator room is back open to the public. I haven't seen it, but the new bridge nearby looks spectacular. Be sure to take the dam tour.
I still have an Argus C3. It was my Dad's.

Cybermom,
Sedona, Valley of Fire, Zion National park are awesome....Take alot of memory cards and extra batteries when you go....
Valley of Fire about 45 min from Las Vegas. Don't forget Red Rock canyon & Mt Charlston.

I agree with others recommendations about Valley of Fire S.P. and Zion N.P. is awesome.
Here's a few of my photos from Zion.

non landscape, go to fremont street for classic 50 and 60's vegas neon signs in operation, as well as they have a neon museum open to the public with older signs that havent been restored yet. Vegas is all about the neon and elvis!

1. Re manual; read and study manual again.
2. Clean camera and equpment.
3. Step out side, point camera in any direction and push button.
4. There are no bad shots in that general area--even on the strip. ALYN

Sure do. When they came out, they were cutting edge ! ("Touch this and I will break your arm and beat you over the head with it!") ALYN

If you have never been to GC--o.k. go, but don't spend a lot of time--there are lots of better places for spectacular shots, i.e, Bryce Canyon and all the redrock country. ALYN
I would second this suggestion for the canyon. Suggest getting there 1/2 hour before sunrise. the colors are fantastic! Drive south of Vegas about 1/2 hour early in morning or early evening for some great desert shots. Bring water and drink copiously as it's getting hot down that way now.

Could any of you give me some suggestions for photo ops in and around Las Vegas? Not the strip, but outlying scenic areas within an hour or two driving distance. We'll be spending a lot of time around the Rio Secco Golf Club watching the college teams compete for the WAC Championship. Could you point me in a direction to get some nice scenic shots, maybe around sunrise/sunset? Also tell me what kind of lens you would use in whatever specific locale you are suggesting. (I have a 50mm, a super-telephoto 500mm, a macro, and a wide angle for a Nikon D300.) Thanks!

I would put Valley of Fire number one. Red Rock Canyon is the closest to Vegas. Death Valley will take a day to see parts of it. We got so interested that we went back the second day. Pahrump on the way to Death Valley has Nevada's only Winery. They also have an excellent restaurant. Mojave Desert also is a short distance out of Vegas. The other sites that are referenced are interesting also. I have pictures of most of these areas on my website
