Las Vegas Photo Ops?
Could any of you give me some suggestions for photo ops in and around Las Vegas? Not the strip, but outlying scenic areas within an hour or two driving distance. We'll be spending a lot of time around the Rio Secco Golf Club watching the college teams compete for the WAC Championship. Could you point me in a direction to get some nice scenic shots, maybe around sunrise/sunset? Also tell me what kind of lens you would use in whatever specific locale you are suggesting. (I have a 50mm, a super-telephoto 500mm, a macro, and a wide angle for a Nikon D300.) Thanks!
Red Rock Canyon is always nice, as is the Hoover Dam

Las Vegas is about 2 hours west of some of the most beautiful country in Southern Utah. If you want an adventure, get off road ... if not stay on the highway headed toward St. George, UT. The scenery is amazing. You wont regret it! (I'm at work, or would post a few pics for you from my own trips through there.)
West on 159...plan a day.

I am in total agreement. Wish I had some photos, but when we were in that area I think I had an Argus C3. (Anyone remember them?)
Check out the Valley of Fire..about an hour outside of Vegas...awesome, desolate place.
Red Rock Canyon is about 45 min from the strip and very pretty. Hoover dam is an awesome site as well. Also look into The Valley of Fire which is about 90 min. north of the strip.
Mount Charleston is very pretty as well, it takes about an hour to get there from the strip.
I've gotten some nice shots of the fountains in front of Bellagio too. If you like to watch jets take off and land there is an observation lot behind the airport on Sunset.
Red Rock Canyon
Bellagio
Valley of Fire
You are not far from some Great National Parks to name a few, Zion being the closest then it is a toss up between Bryce Canyon & The Grand Canyon in distance.
If you haven't seen The Grand Canyon don't miss it and if you have time see Bryce Canyon. Our National Parks are just wonderful places to visit.

The strip at night will provide you lots of fun people pictures and the fountain at the Bellagio at night (you will need a tripod) is pretty cool. Red Rock Canyon and the valley of fire are not to be missed.
Death Valley is completely amazing- be sure to check out the Artist's Palette and the Devil's Golf Course. You might also try Nelson, Nevada- its a ghost town with this staged plane crash.
You must, I repeat MUST, go the the Valley of Fire State Park. It's only 45 minutes outside of Vegas and is a SPECTACULAR place for landscape photography. Last time I was there I also got awesome shots of big horn sheep, right next to the road. This place is close to Vegas and easy to get to, most of the ride being on the interstate. Lots of interesting red rock formations and arches. Unfortunately, one of the larger arches collaped recently. It's an awesome place and not to be missed.
Thanks to all of you for your replies! They are most appreciated. I have made a list of all of them, and will get out the old atlas and start planning.

Hi! There are many places in and around Las Vegas for photo opportunities. Like others said, the Red Rock Canyons is awesome place to take pictures. Also, don't forget to visit the flower displays at the Bellagio gardens. I just came back from Vegas where we attended an Anesthesia Conference. Like you, I shoot with a NIkon D300 and most of the following pictures, I took with the Nikon 50mm f1.8 AFS and Nikon 24-70 f2.8 AFS lens.

A slightly longer ride to "The Skywalk". Though pricey If you have never seen the Grand Canyon, you simply cannot miss there.
