I'm going to take an air balloon ride what lens should I buy? I have a sony a200. My budget is $1000.

A wide angle will give you some nice panorama's from high above the ground. However a nice zoom such as a 70-300 will allow you to focus in closer on things that are happening on the ground too. It's all going to depend on what kind of photos you want to take. What lens or lenses do you already have for your camera?

Sounds like you really don't need a new lens for the ride. If you have to limit yourself to just one lens, I'd take the 28-75 because you can use it to take shots of your fellow passengers in close qyarters and get some spectacular shots of the landscape.

Don't forget to get some shots of the balloon from the basket. That could be pretty dramatic.

I envy you. I've only had one balloon ride but it was super. As part of a group of 50 balloons we lifted off from the Arizona desert badlands at sunrise. The views, the quiet and the fact that you don't feel movement. It feels as if the scenery is moving past you you as you stand still !

An alternative to consider that I use is to rent a lens(s) from my local photography store. I use Nikon equipment and have found the high end 400mm and greater to be somewhat expensive, especailly if I do not use it on a regular basis.
Via usage I get to learn about the lens and whether or not I really need or want.

I did a balloon ride in Kenya. Lighting varied from pre-dawn to bright sun. Needed everything from super wide angle to mega telephoto. Guy next to me had a huge Canon 300mm lens. Spent most of my time just enjoying the beauty and unique first time experience of a hot air balloon ride and almost forgot about my camera. Took some videos. Best still shots I got were before launch and after landing.

I MADE AN ERROR ON MY LENS. IT WAS A NIKON 18-200 ON A D90 MAKING THE REAL RANGE TO BE 27-300, WHICH WAS THE RANGE YOU SUGGESTED !!

We went on a hot air balloon ride and I got fantastic shots of the ground as well as fellow ballooners with my point & shoot.

Great shots! I just signed up for a trip. Can't wait for it! It occurred to me that a polarizing filter might also be a good addition to the camera equipment for the ride.

I'd take one along, but if you start off at dawn, you won't want it then. And if it's hazy, it won't help much either. Didn't use mine on my balloon ride over the savannah.
