No science guy here or even that an image has to look "realistic" whatever that means. It does look oversharpened...and over saturated in PP..each to his own..and it would seem strange the all our monitors are not properly calibrated...

Ward: Just out of curiosity what program do you use for your calibration of your monitor. Maybe mine is not working like it should. When I view my photo's on my monitor my prints match what I see on my monitor. Am I missing something here.

I have not calibrated my monitor but it seems to be set the same as others who have replied. Since you seem to take offense to questions about how the image was processed maybe you should just post your images without asking for any advice. You seem to be very sensitive to any questions that are trying to understand why the image came out the way it did...I'm outta here...Peace

just a smigin too bright for my taste. however it really looks like a painting. have to ask whats a tuff?

The Tuffs are volcanic chimneys, that are usually underwater. As the lake water is drawn down they get exposed. Quite interesting to look at if you go see them in person. Thanks for the comment.

Actually, they are called tufa and are made of calcium carbonate that precipitates out of the highly saline water of the lake around a fresh water spring. The lake has no outlet, and the area is very dry, causing a lot of evaporation of the water of the lake, and the salt brought down to the lake to increase. The salt content in Mono Lake is 8 times that of the ocean. It takes eons of time for the calcium carbonate (the same thing stalagtites and stalagmites are made up of in caves) to form. The water in Mono Lake was much higher in the past, but due to the water coming into the lake being siphoned off by CA for the large city water needs for its cities to the West of Mono Lake, the lake has fallen, exposing the tufa formations. A conservation group has sued California, and now some water is being allowed back into the lake, raising the level once again. I agree that your picture is a bit too colorful, and the jet trails a bit distracting. In fact, I find that the sharpness and "in your face" nature of the photo distracts from any one item....the tufa, the mountains, and the sky.

largeformat: In looking at your picture again, did you add the mountains in PP? I have been at that formation, and don't remember mountains like that in the distance. If you did add the mountains, try taking them out, and lowering the contrast of the tufa some. I think you will have a nicer photo.
