Just trying to make sure the person it was intended for saw it.

I'm a NYer and this summer I took a walking tour with family in Manhattan. I had two lenses a 24-120mm and a 70-300. I was very satisfied with the 24-120 95% of the time. There are some sconces on some buildings that the 70-300 was nice; but not necessary. I think a zoom is much better than a prime, my opinion.

I'm always amazed at the number of people that are afraid of NYC. It is one of the safest large cities in America. Women and children everywhere. Nothing to be scared of.

would love to hear from those only that have been to nyc and what lens you used, or better yet, what one lens do you wish you would have taken. I am headed there for a wedding over Thanksgiving and will have about one full day to myself to walk the streets..... I wont have full kit with me, and will be taking a full frame Canon 5dm3.
Thanks in advance for any/all input.

I would something in the order of a 28-300mm Lens.
You'll want to shoot a street corner and the top of a building.

You may wish to consider the new Canon G9X.

The most versatile all-round lens is the Canon 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 IS. It has an exceptional reach, from near wide angle to a fair super telephoto, relatively good low light performance, especially with a high end body, and handles nearly every kind of photo task exceptionally well to fairly well. Its great drawback is the weight. At the end of a long day, combined with a heavy DSLR body, it will give you a backache.

For such tasks, when I am not being paid, I am starting to think of a good fixed lens camera. Canon has finally made one that has nearly everything I want in a camera, the G3X. Its first incarnation, however, has a couple of fatal flaws I cannot accept, including a lack of a viewfinder, and a very slow top frame rate. I bet the replacement, in a year or two, will be a real killer do-all camera with no compromises. Until then, I will just take the 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 IS and put up with its weight.

These day's I don't think there's anything worth taking other than an 18-200 or 18-300 lens unless you see yourself as searching for a piece of work to make you famous! There was a photo in one of the photo mag's several years back of a parakeet that made a couple hundred thousand dollars for the guy that took it. Nothing special I didn't think, just a bird with a bad background I figured. Turned out the photo was taken with a disposable film camera!

I most certainly would not fret what lens to take, simply take the widest zoom I have! My favorite walking around lens in film days was a 28-200 Sigma. Cheap light weight lens that covered all the base's. Photo quality was more than good enough for me! These day's I usually put on my 18-140, if I need a longer lens, tuff luck! My longer lens, a 50-300 and 70-300 are to short on the wide side for me!

My wife and I go to The City often. I take my Tamron 16-300mm lens. It covers everything.

Just got back from a month in NYC, and while I had my entire kit I found that the 50mm was the one I most relied upon. Combination of lightness and versatility. (I was walking all the time).

I'm just back from NYC - it was very wet so I hope you at least get better weather. Glad I took my reasonably fast f2.8 24-70mm found that covered my needs well. I'm female and preferred shooting the city at night, I felt perfectly safe walking around, in fact safer than I feel walking in my home city of Toronto, Ontario. Have fun!

Coincidence -- I am from Toronto too! And I agree about the wet. My 50mm will open to f 1.8 , so another advantage there. I got some very good shots from the HighLine at night and also from Christopher Street pier:

The Empire State lit up for Veterans Day, no rain, yay! Taken with Nikon Df. I plan on doing the HighLine next trip, I'm told it's well worth doing.
