would love to hear from those only that have been to nyc and what lens you used, or better yet, what one lens do you wish you would have taken. I am headed there for a wedding over Thanksgiving and will have about one full day to myself to walk the streets..... I wont have full kit with me, and will be taking a full frame Canon 5dm3.
Thanks in advance for any/all input.

If I were gonna shoot there, I would shoot with a Colt 45 and leave the lenses at home!!!

Or the 35mm. You really don't need a lot of lenses to get a feel for the city.

Thanks Old Tigger. I've been thinking 50 on a full frame or 35 as moving around in the crowded city could be tought and I can always crop in. I will be shooting from the street level for the most part , during the day as well at night.

I used to do street photography in Manhattan quite often. This was during the days of film. I would go with either a 24mm or a 35mm. They were unobtrusive and allowed getting close to and photographing people, and pretty good for shooting buildings and street scenes.

If I was going today, I would still choose a moderate wide angle. If you are not looking to shoot candids, a wide to moderate zoom could be a good choice.

If you see somebody who looks photographic, don't be afraid to ask if you can photograph them. Many of these characters love the attention. You may find some of the homeless make good subjects. For $5 you will have a model for awhile. Be aware that once they leave and spread the word, you will have a number of other people offering to model for you ... for $5 or less. If you treat these folks with respect, you could have a very rewarding photo session.

Something I did overlook for years, until I met a guy who published a book on the subject, were birds in Central Park. Of course a long lens would be needed, but if you are a birder you may want to make arrangements to have a long lens available.

Have fun ... shoot, shoot, shoot!

Thanks, yes I am a birder and I could spend the entire day in Cpark. would hope to save that for an extended stay and set a full day in the spring, but thanks for the insight. Not looking to shoot people, but if the moment is real, I will snap it. Leaning towards the 35, but I know the 50 will force me to be more creative with my own position. thanks again.

General purpose lens: 24-105mm. Both Canon and Sigma make one. I own and use the Sigma offering. I have visited NYC once, and if memory serves, I had a Sigma 17-70mm lens mounted on a Canon T4i.

Anyway, a moderate zoom lens will serve you well in NYC.

Travel the city light. You likely will do a lot of walking.

I'm flying there over the Thanksgiving weekend myself. If I was only going to take one lens with my 5DIII for 24x7 shooting, it would be a 24-70 f/2.8L. If I went prime and only one, I'd go with the 35L or maybe a 50. But, then again, I'd never go with only one ...

I was there recently with a similar trip such as yours and used the 5D3 and the 24-105 combo. Worked well.

weather forcast will dictate the dress code and I may end up with a small shoulder bag with raincoat...... and if so I will take a 2nd lens. My f1.4 Sigma ART 35 and 50 will give me enough light to shoot at night and I think they would be a better carry then the 24-105 f4. then again a wide lens like 17-40 f4 could make for some great photos as well. I see some test shots happening tomorrow. lol. thanks

Frank, it helps us decide which one of us you think is dumb if you use "Quote Reply" instead of just posting an unreferenced reply.

Didn't say anybody was dumb. Said it was a dumb comment. Even smart people make them; I'm sure we both have. And thanks for pointing out that button.
