makes me wonder if the market is purely saturated. Seems like EVERYONE has a camera let alone phone camera.
any news about Olympus?

The economy in the US is hardly in a slump. The spin machine may say so but the employment and growth do not show that. On the other hand the ROW is in a slump.

In all likelihood the reason for decreased camera sales is the cell phone which is now a point and shoot camera.

Canon is basically walking away from this market.

I think we will see fewer models from the majors and a concentration on just three dslrs, maybe three point and shoots and two bridge cameras.

When the economy's in a slump, the sale of luxury items are effected the most. Cameras are at least to some extent luxury items. (Obviously not in all cases - industrial use, security cameras, etc.) But enough to have an impact on sales during economic down turn.

This is good news - we can expect better, cheaper, more innovative camera gear, quality control and service from these guys as they escalate the fight for market share. Nuttin' wrong with that!

yeh, but if the market disappears, which it is doing because of cell phones, the available funds for non- recurring engg drys up and manuf go elsewhere.

Sad to say, but most manufacturing have Already gone elsewhere, particularly Asia, vast proportion of Nikon products are made in China, Thailand, Vietnam, and same for most brands. Hence the huge trade deficit. I cannot agree that the economy is good if 48 million people are on food stamps and 92 million are not counted as unemployed because they have given up looking for jobs. Smoke and mirror politics.

Your ignorance is showing again!

As Gump said:

Stupid is as stupid be

How fast you ignore and forget the 750,000 jobs being lost per month under Bush!

A GOP congress which allowed no new legislation being passed such as the infrastructure bill.

You are a hack of the worst kind

Job Growth: Over the Clinton and Obama Presidencies, over 30m new net jobs were created. Over the two Bush Presidencies, 3.5m. On a yearly basis, perhaps a more fair comparison, the two Democrats have produced jobs at 7 times the rate of the two Bushes: 2.1m vs. 300,000 per year.

Unemployment Rate: Both Democratic Presidents saw more than a 3% point [drop] in the unemployment rate during their terms. The Bushes saw increases in the unemployment rate by more than 2% and 3% points respectively.

Part of that is that many of the "die hard" photographers have already purchased their "next" camera or are waiting for the next release of cameras. Also, many of the point and shoot people are opting to use cell phones. Remember that 70% (roughly) of Nikon, Canon and Sony digital sales come from point and shoot. The "advanced amateur and professional crowd, while spending much more money on camera equipment, don't replace as often as they take better care of longer life heaver gear. P and S cameras get lost and damaged much more often and thus at $50 to $500 apiece represent a larger portion of each camera companies income.

Could it be because everyone uses the camera on their phones instead of purchasing a camera?

Sure, except the Die hards still refuse to acknowledge the fact that cell phone cameras are capable of taking better and better photos. Come back to this forum in a couple of years time and you will find expensive cameras go the way of Rollei, Contax, Alpa, Voigtlander and video cameras go the way of Bolex, Beaulieu, Bell and Howell. They were all great cameras and movie cameras during their time with a price to match.

Racist Congress? Such inflammatory language sprayed like viruses with a sneeze. No substance or substantiation. Also way off the mark from the thread as it was begun.

I don't know what happened but my notes are below. Sorry for the technical glitch.

Come on everyone. Rare is the Administration of Congress that sees the full effects of its' own doings. This country, like most countries, takes time to react to any change.

Now comparing Administrations' performances without adjusting for the conditions present when they took office is misleading at best.

So back to the topic at hand: Camera Sales

I for one am holding off a purchase. I suspect many others are also waiting. I drool over the a7R-II, but am hopeful that Nikon will get the message and offer a few features such as at least a tilting LCD screen in a new version. Seems to me that both Canon and Nikon are trying to meter out changes (that they have in the lab now) a drop at a time.

Trying to stay on topic, sales tend to decline 3rd quarter because people see Christmas coming and will hold off buying in hopes of getting what they want on sale.
