I don't take pictures of vehicles unless they're old and broken down, and then I don't really know what to do with them. This old wreck that I came upon in the Pennsylvania woods was irresistible, so I had to try. Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Super perspective, Minnie. Love those ultra-wide angle lenses :) The autumn setting is so appealing, and the uniform light is perfect to bring out the vehicle's details. Couldn't be any better IMO.

Its an HDR dream but your more subtle approach works just fine min. This is a snap one could play around with for hours accentuating the rust etc. You know like St3v3's landscape this image in its Raw form would make a great plaything for people who frequent this place.
Good find nicely treated the min way.

Minnie,

I love this photo. It reminds me of a professional photographer that has taken various photos of old vehicles and also does light painting on them. You might try to go back, if you can, and do some light painting and maybe use some different color gels over your individual light shots. I'm not sure, but he may do a little HDR processing on one or some of his cars and vehicles . . . just can't remember. I'm not a big fan of HDR, but it may be kind of nifty looking, if not too overdone . . . Hmmmm?

I think I might play around with it, if I were you, and see if you could lighten the darker areas on the car in the front and also on the inside if you can reclaim the lost data inside the car.

I'd try contrasting the blues in the car with the yellows, greens, and oranges of the leaves and the ground cover. Maybe bring out the blue in the sky and try to get a similarity of the sky color and the blues in the car? To me that would be very cool and most pleasing to the eye. Honestly, I really love that shot!

Best Regards,
Tom

Thank you Linda, I took a ton of shots of this thing, it was hard to pick one out, the close in details were fun too.

Thanks Billy! It does have a bit of creative grunge processing on just the car part. I've made several versions just trying to figure out what to do.

As far as the raw file, ask and ye shall receive. Here's a dropbox link, I'd love to see other versions. I made it a DNG so hopefully everyone has something that'll read it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/dbttqu9t1gsbc4z/car%20dng%20%281%20of%201%29.dng?dl=0 I'm sure I can learn a lot from folks that do more of this.

I'm torn here. I would like to see it cropped tighter; but then you would lose all that great fall color. I think Linda hit the nail on the head. This one seems hard to improve. I like it. I am also a sucker for busted up vehicles and buildings. Don't know why.

Tom, I appreciate this thoughtful and detailed critique. Sounds like you may have some experience with these things! I can't go back, thousands of miles away now, but I can remember this next time I run across an old wreck with promise. I will see what I can get from those darker areas, perhaps some more detail may be hiding... That is very interesting thought about the color work. I did do a bit of color jousting with this version, but had not thought to do it purposefully to mix and match. I do that sometimes with landscapes but it did not occur to me to do it with this. Thanks so much, again, for all these tips, and I'd love to see what you could make of it if you wanted to give it a go, the link to the unedited raw file is in my response to Billy.

Thanks Erich. I'll photograph just about anything that's old and falling apart, who knows why. Don't worry, I have a bunch of shots of closer-up details. It was such a great vehicle to take time with, but to find it in a forest surrounded by changing leaves and no signs, buildings, wires or other junk to have to work around was a real treat.

Thank you Minnie. I am so new to this section that I am trying to walk softly as best I can. I certainly don't want to get out of bounds and wasn't sure if viewer's are allowed to make an attempt at changes or not. I see the link for the dng file and will download it and perhaps play with it a bit to see what total destruction I can do to such a super image! Honestly, it does look like a fun one to manipulate and see what I can come up with based on my preferences and ideas. It may take me a while to give it some time, but I have it on my list! Thank you so much for the submission and I honestly think it's a great shot.

I think Billy said it very well. I also think Linda is quite correct about the setting being just about perfect and the lighting is great coming from the rear of the vehicle and casting more shadows as one's eye's migrate to the front of the car. The blackness inside is somewhat mysterious and makes me want to try and see what's inside! Love it! Marvelous, indeed.

Best Regards,
Tom

We are pretty flexible here. If someone provides a link to play, that means you can go for it! Many of us are thrilled to have someone take the time to tinker with our images, I know I am! If in doubt, ask. We just have two basic rules here: respect and honesty. That makes it easy for us to have a bunch of fun. Glad to have you in the village!

Minnie,

Well, I can't go wrong with a welcome like that. Thanks. I couldn't help myself and I started working on your image. I may upload it fairly soon to get everyone's comments. There are definitely several possibilities for this image. :-)

If you can go back, I'd recommend some close-up abstracts of the rust spots.

Minnie,

Here is one rendition of your image. I used ACR and then went into Photoshop. I did not use any other program and made several adjustments using 14 layers plus the Background layer.

I made many Curves Layers and saturation layers for various colors and saturation. I also did a lot of my work with masks and also did some selective lightening and darkening. See what you think of this one.

Best Regards,
Tom

Ol' Billys attempt min Bit of this bit of that and some accentuating of the rust with High Pass filter sparingly painted in.
Oh Dave popped on to see how it was all going!
