Much more expensive than the 16-35 which is as good and also has VR. You don't need f2.8 for landscapes which are usually at f16 or higher. But the VR is useful because of the need for high f-stop when you can't use a tripod.

There is a use for f2.8...but landscape isn't it.

The OP asked for a lens for landscape and portrait photography. The 16-35mm is too short for portraits.

Well I have 28 300 FF nikon lens. Yes a couple of times adjusted in photoshop. Used take it all over to cover any situation. It is great for the price $900.The lens recommended earlier are part of the triad of dream Nikon lens like the 14 to 24 & 24 70 which I had. They are good but much to expensive. 4k!
How about for portraits the simple 85mm 1.8 prime. My favorite Nikon lens of all.Yes you can buy 1.4's but very expensive. Great 85 1.8 lens a less then 5 hundred bucks.
And the 28 300 is a gem that can be a one lens carry. Had a small Tarmac sling bag with 28 300 and D700 for years. Even road bikes with it on my shoulder. Good luck.

100 to 135 range for portraits and 20 to 35 range for landscapes.

In my view the 85mm f/1.4 is the best lens for portraits.

For landscapes there are many good lenses. You can use the 24mm, 35mm, or55mm primes. In my case I carry the 24-120mm as my primary landscape lens to minimize weight.

I'll have to disagree with this, 50mm is not nearly wide enough for many landscapes.

Agreed. With a full frame camera landscapes are often done at 20-24mm (but sometimes with a telephoto as well, depending on the subject); portraits typically at 85-100mm (85mm is the classic FF portrait length). The 24-70mm f/2.8 would work but might be a little short for portraits. The 24-120mm f/4 is an excellent multipurpose lens, more versatile and half the price of the 24-70mm. If that is too expensive you could look at the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 VR, another good lens but not quite as good as the 24-70mm or 24-120mm.

My suggestions would be #1: 24-120mm f/4; #2: 24-70mm f/2.8; #3 24-85mm.

In my humble opinion:
1. Portrait- 70-200mm f2.8, 200mm f2, 85mm f1.4
2. Landscape- 14-24m f2.8, 16-35mm f3.5

Don't forget the 24-120 f4 that comes with the D750.

For what you're wanting it for, I would go for the 24-120mm lens.

I use the Nikon 24-120 f/4 Nikon G Lens for most landscapes and portraits. It is in the $1K price range. It produces good images. You can read customer comments on it at BHPhotovideo.com under the lens listing. A very good walking around lens.

The 105 D Focus, or the 85 1.8, or 1.4 --and I use the Sigma 8-16 nearly all the time on landscapes--and yes, I know that the image is "only" 24MB

Everyone has their opinion on lenses. So here's mine, for portraits I use 85mm, 24mm-70mm VR & 135mm DC. For landscape I use 24mm-70mm VR, 16mm-35mm & 28mm-300mm.

Two of my landscape images won first place here at UHH. You can see them at my website.

Maybe just a typo, but there is no word "len". A single one is a lens, plural is lenses. I don't mean to be smarmy but I've seen this come up in other postings occasionally.

Absolutely! For sharp crisp images, one lens does not cover what the OP is looking for. Bruce, you are right on with your selection.
Most all my portrait shots were in the 105 range on my 70-200 f2.8 and since I purchased the 14-24, it's the only landscape lens that I take!
