A 50~135 zoom covers nearly all my landscape and portraiture needs for the FX format.

I just recently purchased a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED lens to use on my Df for landscapes/seascapes.
I don't do portraits, so I can't help you with a suggestion there.

The D800 is a FF camera and you need a FF lens for it. There are two very good landscape lenses, The first is the AS-s Nikkor 14-24 f2.8. The next is the AF-s Nikkor 24-70 f2.8.

The 24-70 can double as a portrait lens. Both of these lenses will cost you $$ close to 2K per lens.

I'll have to disagree with this, 50mm is not nearly wide enough for many landscapes.

I agree Mac, it's the best landscape lens I have found, so far! As for portraits, I use my Nikon 105 macro. works well!

I happen to know what I use for most of my landscapes.

Nobody said you didn't, I said I disagree. The lens is not wide enough for many landscapes. I happen to know what I shoot with as well, and I could not get many shots with the 14-24 lens!

My mistake. I thought you were replying to my comment to the OP.

The 16-35mm f/4 is an affordable, quality landscape lens. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is not so affordable but IQ is terrific, focal range versatile and I find works very well for portraits in the 70-135mm range. You don't have to be on top of your subject to get the portrait shots you want.

The 70-200mm is one of my favorite lens but I have the f/4 something. I also adore the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5. 18-70 sits on my camera on the car seat next to me most of the time. Check out my latest landscapes and see if it contains enough subject for what you are looking for.

Is that 18-70 a cropped sensor lens?

The OP has a full frame D800.

You are correct. But I still like it. It is cropped. Sorry.

i have 2 full frame nikon cameras. my walk around lens is the nikon 28-300, covers a huge range. i also have the nikon 16mm f2.8 fisheye. i have used it often for landscapes, sometimes i use the lens correction in photoshop to straighten things out...
love both lenses!

I have an arsenal of lenses but since I bought the Nikon 28 - 300, my other lenses get little use. I bought a like new 28 - 300 at KEH for a great price.
