Surge protectors help, most of the time. You should have an uninterruptable power supply (UPS). The good ones, like APC, will have protection for your cable modem.
Remember, any cable connected to the computer can act as a antenna if the strike is close enough.
Don't see how that will help if you are outside on battery power. Anyone I have ever known who was that close to a strike had broken eardrums and blood coming out their ears. You were lucky indeed.

well it happened lighting hit the computer and wiped out everything, have to start all over again. load programs and plugins and everything. it sure scared me. I was out side and it hit 2 feet away from me the flash of light was so brilliant and the crack of the lighting hitting was so loud I ran so hard to get in the house and my dog was hiding between the wall and the toilet he is afraid of storms. I did have everything backed up. just going to be a while to load everything again.
Get carbonite for $59.00 per year for peace of mind. I got wiped out and had everything back within two days. Highly recommeded! tHANKs
Hmmmm.... Lighting, lightening, lightning. Wonder which is worse? (joke guys, ease up)

That is one solution everybody should use, there are others like Backblaze (which does not back up your system, just data).
First line of defense is a "Whole house" surge protector on your circuit breaker box. Cost is from $60 to over $200. Next in an uninterruptible power supply that has, in addition to the battery, a really good surge circuit.
The worst "protection" is to plan on unplugging things. Protection has to be "set it and forget it." Lightning can't come out of a clear blue sky but commonly does come out of ordinary-looking clouds.
2 feet away! 😳 I've been close but never that close. You are one lucky lady you are still standing! Glad to hear all you have to worry about is the computer.
I use a battery backup and a surge protector. Where I live in Oregon, we get very few thunder storms. But I'm sure glad it didn't hit you.

Are surge protectors effective in a case like this?
BAM! Phssszzzzttt...
A direct lightning hit usually FRIES the equipment beyond recognition. A NEARBY hit can render microcircuits useless. A data wipe that leaves a computer unscathed is rare.
I once had a nearby hit take out my phone line melted it against a water pipe under my house. Fortunately, that's ALL it did! It took quite a while to find the fused wires.
I was standing next to the computer in the clubhouse when a strike occurred, Sparks & smoke, took out the router, modem and the NIC.
All of our utilities are underground, we never did find where it hit.

Actually you're lucky to be alive!
Wow! You lucked out on that one. Lightning generally targets the highest conductive object in the area with the charge in the ground going up though it to meet the charge coming down from the cloud. My computer got hit a few years ago and the only damage was the video card and the Surge protector.
Two feet away? You're lucky you weren't fried!
I can't seem to "unwatch" this topic.

Maybe those people were unlucky.
I had lightning hit 20-25 feet away once. I couldn't hear for a few hours, but nothing broken.
