My dad had a Lark hardtop. We went everywhere in it. Thanks for posting the pics. He also owned a Nash at one time also.

It would be fun to build up an old Lark or low boy. I do have a Caddy 500 cu. in. complete drive train just sitiing around with fresh crank kit in it--hummmmmm.

In the late 50's, I owned a 56 Golden Hawk when in high school. A beautiful car, but an engineering disaster. It had a huge Packard V8 engine with the new twin ultramatic AT which overweighted the car in the front and made it a handling nightmare compared to the other Hawks. And, being a speed crazed teenager, the automatic transmission could not handle the power/weight ratio and leaked transmission fluid profusely. No mechanics knew how to fix the transmission, so I ended up practically having to give it away for $200. The '57 Golden Hawk was a much better performer with the 289 Stude V8.

Our family had a '51 Champion "Space Ship" and since I was 9 at the time my friends and I spent many hours playing Flash Gordon in it. We also had a '57 station wagon that looked a lot like the '57 Chevy - Dave

i wonder how long that other company continued making the Avanti after Studebaker closed down.

The man who bought the rights to Avanti was arrested on fraud charges in 2006, and that spelled the end for his company.

There were 4 versions of the Avanti, R1-R4 with the R4 being a full blown race car. The Avanti broke many records at the Bonneville test track. I believe that the Avanti was the first production car to have disk breaks. The Avanti was very advanced for the time it was produced.

I always heard that Studebaker went belly up because they were way ahead of their time.

I've seen Studebakers and Avantis but I never rode in one or even sat in one.
There's a program on Discovery Channel called "Counting Cars." In one episode The Count, aka Danny Koker, visits a old car collector who had a Studebaker called FrankenStude, or something like that. Apparently that car had some sort of reputation. It was in beautiful condition.

Avanti's were still being custom made here in South Bend through the mid '80's. They were bought out and moved to Ohio for a couple of years before closing down.

If anyone is interested there is a Studebaker Museum, now in a permanent home, here in South Bend, IN. If interested, I might go down and take some pictures if anyone is interested. The Museum sits not far from the old Studebaker mansion (Victorian) which houses a restaurant in the original decor. Years ago I did a little work in the mansion and been through most of it. It was easy to get lost in the basement. There was even an old fashioned bowling ally down there at one time.

Maybe a little off topic, but my '53 Commander coupe was the most beautiful but irritating car I have ever owned. In any kind of hot weather it would vapor lock after shutdown, and wouldn't start for a loooong time. No amount of little cooling tricks worked.

It's too bad it's been so long ago, I knew a guy (Len has since passed away) who retired from Studebaker that seemed to know all the little "idiosyncrasies" with Studies. He also owned a lot of them, having bought a new one every two years. Employees were able to buy them "at cost" as a benefit of working for Studebaker. Times have changed.

I have always liked the Studebaker design. I was just at a car show & got these Studebaker photos. I couldn't get a good front photo of the rare red
( Granturismo) Studebaker. I'll try to send you all the photos.

Since I saw the Picture of the Studebaker that Bluescreek Put on this morning 8/23 I decided to put a few pictures on... I loved the studebakers and thought/think that they are/were to most overlooked cars ever made in the usa....

Enjoy the pictures...

Mike

The 1958 Commander was fast as greased lightning...

The 1960 Lark was a flat head 6cyls, got good milage and extremely reliable and comfortable.

The 56 Golden Hawk was beautiful and Fast, have driven one, but never owned one..

The AVANTI could fit in with any "Sports" car of TODAY and besides that it didn't/won't Rust..
Since I saw the Picture of the Studebaker that Blu... (show quote)

As a kid I remember that the blue car's body design was way ahead of its time. This, and other reasons I'm sure, are why the company no longer exists. Too bad because I understand they make excellent cars.

First thing I ever drove was a Studebaker Pick-Up, pre-1940's, that the church owned and used to haul stuff around the church yard and grave yard. I was too young to have a license (neither did the truck have plates) but it was only used around the grounds so nobody cared. (:<))
