Funny you should mention the 1DX. In order for IT to shoot at it's max 15 fps, guess what? You not only LOSE full exposure control, but the camera shoots in crop mode! The max frame rate using the entire sensor is 12 fps. ;)

It's even funnier when you mention something about which you know nothing. The 1 Dx will shoot at 14 fps, not 15, but the mirror will be locked up and the focus will remain locked. Full exposure control is maintained and NO cropping will take place unless specified in the camera's menu. That cropping will only be detailed in the metadata and not in the image results until cropped on a computer. Anything else you know nothing about?

And while we are on the subject of lenses, everyone knows that Canon has a bunch of lenses. GREAT.

Sony offers lots of lenses too, covering the ENTIRE range of focal lengths AND quality/price points.

In other words, in the "Sony" system, you can buy 4 different 50mm lenses, 2 different 70-400mm and so on and so forth.

More than enough to get the job (or fun) done with ease.

BESIDES, while having a bunch of options available is good for the Soul, you only wear one lens at a time. Just one. And without counting quality legacy glass from Minolta, there are PLENTY of lenses available for Sony A mount cameras to get whatever done that needs doing. ;)

I don't shoot the 1DX and it's been a while since I read the review so I apologize for misspeaking and the mistakes in my previous post....but you know what; trading exposure control for auto focus control is a TERRIBLE thing. :(

Because my lowly, less than a $1000 dollar camera from Sony will shoot at 12 fps WITH FULL AUTO FOCUS. At f/3.5... but that ain't chopped liver. Compared to a $6000+ camera I'd say it is a bargain, ESPECIALLY when it will shoot 12 fps RAW and the 1DX at 14 fps only shoots JPEG. ;)

BTW, the NX1 shoots 15 fps with complete af control in RAW for just under $2K...

And you say images show up as cropped in the metadata? Isn't that still cropping?

And while the 15 cross type AF points of the A77II are located in the center of the field of view... so are the 21 cross type AF points of the 1DX. I guess having them in the center is good idea huh? ;)

I had forgotten about the mirror lock up issue on many DSLRs at high frame rate. Yes, I would have to agree that continuous focus is pretty important for high fps in sports or any other action, especially with a wide aperture and very short DoF. That was another reason I had chosen my Sony. Thanks for reminding me (and all of us) about that.

And Cholly, you don't need to be defensive because you got a spec slightly wrong about a camera that's beyond the reach our needs of most of us anyway. Your point was well-received to most, and your point was valid despite minor difference in actual specs. Keep posting the differences and the utility of oft-overlooked Sony cameras - you seem more knowledgeable about them than most anyone here.

I work with a bunch of engineers... ask any non-engineer what that means!

DG, it's been 3-4 years since I read about the 1DX and since I'm both old and senile, mistakes are inevitable.

I did remember however, that there were strings attached to speed though... that is, until Sony revived pellicle mirror (SLT) based auto focus technology.

What is lost in terms of light is MORE than compensated for the increase in speed and focus accuracy. A good trade off in my opinion.

I look forward to the A99 replacement. It is due out in September and it should be as revolutionary as the A7RII.
A big backlit full frame sensor with the A77II's AF module? I think it'll be a MONSTER!

You get a sports camera, or you get big megapixels...., pick one....but you can't have both. I suggest a Canon 5Dmklll.

Yes. This is true. The Canon 5DmkIII. is the best of both worlds. It's like cheating. They took the 7DmkIII and deflated it.

Cholly, I'm not even gonna comment on that stuff.
You're just making up your own 1Dx specs!! Was the 1Dx even out 3-4 years ago??
And when did they take out half of the Cross focus points??
I'll bet ya that the 1Dxll comes out before the A99ll!!!

This overview is from 2011, 21 cross type AF points in the center, shoots JPEGS only at 14fps.

It's all there in black and white.........

I guess using "quote reply" is beyond you. If you are exclusively talking to your buddy "Sharpie", why don't you just use the PM option?

I hate being rude, but... isn't that just a little hypocritical considering the nature of YOUR criticism? :?:

I mean... you responded to a post that clearly was addressed to someone else, but contained information germane to discussion at hand. That would and should have been evident to you provided you read the post previous to the one in question.

Again, I apologize if I'm stepping on your toes... but you kinda stepped on mine. :(

No I didn't step on any toes. Your post was not addressed to anyone! So, pls explain how my post was "hypocritical", if you know the meaning of that word or at least according to your interpretation of that word.

They have some very good lenses, but agreed compared with canon or nikon, choices are limited. I think they are offering 5-6 new lenses this year. Guessing they will catch up soon.
