If you shoot with Nikon the best is the D4. Very expensive, but the #1 camera for nikon users for sports.

I never shoot sports, not interested in that so I have no experience, but in addition to the typical Nikon and Canon sports cameras you should look at the Samsung NX1, 28 mpx crop sensor and lot of frames pr. second, more than in any Nikon or Canon camera with same size sensor or bigger. Not many lenses but all you need I would say. Have seen lot of good reviews about this camera.

Another combo worth considering is the Nikon 1 V3 and the 70-300 lens with it. Gives you very fast autofocusing, good stabilizing and a zoom range not matched by other systems for nearly as few dollars. Also lot of good reviews about this combo.

JPL, com'on!!
Sports is NOT about fps. Yes, sometimes it can help.
So if you never shoot sports, then do you ever go and watch sports??
I shoot mostly cycling.
This last year at the Sea Otter Classic, they issued 200 media passes. For THAT kind of action, I don't recall I ever even saw a Nikon!! I'm not kidding! Let alone a Sammysong!!! Yes, the typical sea if WHITE lenses!
Why would you try and steer him to a company that doesn't even have a lens for shooting sports, except maybe a basic lens!
Like any photography, sports is about composition and the story. Remember the "thrill of victory, the agony of defeat"? ;-)

Again, Canon has no patent on white lenses. Other pro lenses are white (I've read it helps keep a pro lens from overheating in the sun.)

Timing is everything. I will take my 12fps over 5fps any and every time. Even a couple weeks ago I was shooting a simple belly flop contest at 8fps because I wanted exposure control. I missed a couple shots that I would've have nailed at 12fps - and this was a belly flop contest, not a fast-paced ball game. Live and learn.

I have to disagree. The right lens on a camera with good af & tracking is more important than fps unless you spray & pray. Much better to track your subject with good AF system & take your shot. The 7D ll & 1Dx are perfect for sports because of excellent AF tracking & any no. Of excellent lenses available. Bab

Lots of great ideas and advice THANKS
So I might be hearing that I need to learn to be more consistent on my shooting (and Better) so I do not have to crop as much ? and maybe I get 2 different cameras instead of trying to do both with same camera !!

Maybe there is another camera that fits our guy perfectly as he is already familiar with Sony cameras. That is the Sony Alpha 77 M2. According to a respectable website that is a better camera for sports than the Canon 7D M2. And if he buys that camera and a good lens with it for the sports, he can use the lens on his another Sony camera with a Sony adapter if he chooses so. I think this would be the very best choice for him, unless he wants to spend $10.000 on testing some Canon gear rather than reading about other people's testing 8-)

No, sports is not my thing at all, at least not to photograph or watch. I do some mountain climbing now and then and I also like to go bowling or play pool, drive fast boats and do some hunting, but that is about all my interest in sports. If you want to stand on the sideline and take some photos of me you are welcome ;-)

Being flippant makes you look like an ass, and you often need no help there. If you think 5fps will let you get that perfectly-timed shot as easily as 12, then perhaps you are indeed as dumb as you come off.

The dude was looking for some advice. This has degenerated into a sparring match. Who really cares for that?

What not carry that on in PM's.

The A77II is an EXCELLENT sports camera. The AF is faster than any other camera, and the focus tracking is outstanding. With pro glass (Zeiss or G) you can capture anything, anytime, almost anywhere.

It's a GREAT camera...

Gecko, I think you missed my point!
My point is that you might get the perfect shot using "one shot" and you might miss that shot using 14 fps. You are taking A LOT for granted. That, that miracle shot will be in perfect focus. That it would be a good exposure.
I use 10 fps with a 7dmkll and 14fps with a 1Dx and those cameras and fps don't guarantee anything, if they are really difficult shots, they just help!!
And just HOW many white, non Canon lenses have YOU seen at the sports venues that YOU shoot at??
Personally, I've never seen one!
Would I recommend a sports camera to someone, knowing the camera has no strong system to back the owner up? NO!! ;-)

I would observe that there is a direct correlation between one's knowledge of how to photograph sports action and high burst rates - the less you know, the more you need!
