I've got the same thing and my Gateway is four years old. Troubleshoot says it doesn't have all the updates. It's been updated many times by them automatically.

I'll let the dust settle and pursue it later.

No, there is nothing in my task bar.

In my experience (25 years teching, consulting) Gateway tweaks the Microsoft OS's more to their liking than any other MFR. When you say "they" update regularly, are updates coming from Gateway.

I have "fixed" a number of Gateways by purchasing the OEM software packaged by Windows (presuming Windows 7) and loaded Windows "clean"... not the Gateway hack.

You may be looking at that. Or, back up your drive, take your Gateway media and do a fresh install.

Underneath all that Gateway modification of the OS, lies a real computer that will run consumer OEM and likely upgrade to Windows 10.

First, I'd get the download that makes a Windows 10 boot disk or USB stick and load 10 clean.

Best way to do this without losing data and the ability to run what you have, would be to buy a new hard drive, Pull out the existing drive (match it as close as possible), put in the new drive and load the bootable Windows 10 disk. A NEW hd matching sizewise with the one in the computer should cost less than $100.

All manufacturers, when they license Windows from Microsoft, have the right to make modifications in the OS, and Gateway is the most aggressive. I've made a lot of money on Gateway computers... fixing and configuring. Not so much last few years as they have gone out of favor in the market and you just don't see them.

The biggest nest of Gateways I have ever run into was in South Dakota, where they ship new from and also where they have their huge refurb facility, at opposite ends of the state.

I got a pop up screen from Microsoft this morning that said Windows 10 was installed and asked to click on the "Let's continue" button. I am somewhat at a stale mate on the switch from Windows 7.

You have 30 days to roll it back, and I have done it on a couple of machines to see how it works.

Worked fine for me and easy to deploy in Settings.

I had heard that they will stop after 2015, anyway, it doesn't matter to me now, it seems working fine for me. i will get a new one when my hard drive running out of room, I am using external HD for most of my work. I may consider a Mac.

Different support levels exist. General support for consumer problems ended early in early 2015. Support for general trouble problems is paid after that.

Free support in the form of updates, fixes and patches continues for all windows 7 until 2020. That's always how it has worked, many OS's previously. Same system prevails.

That means that if you call or contact Microsoft for support, have you credit card out. Otherwise, you are still going to get updates, in the manner you have set them up... automatic or your choice of download and tell me their on the machine, or just alert me when downloads are available (you must initiate the updates, if you want them on your machine)

That last choice is the reason Microsoft is mandating updates to automatic. People who are not savvy, pass on the updates (mostly the home versions where the mandating is taking place) and their computers get screwed up, not having the fixes that stop hackers.

Microsofts decision to make updates mandatory and automatic on the widely used home version is the best thing to happen for most computer users in years.

Fortunately I am somewhat retired from servicing computers because when consumers had the ability to defer updates on the Home version... they did just that (luddites) and people like me fixed their messed up computers and charged an "arm and a leg" for fixing what the updates would have avoided.

Piss and Moan, but MS is doing most of the computer users on the planet a good service with mandated auto updates.

The control freaks who only know enough to mess up their computers may be quite surprised at how good the OS really is when defended by automatic updates.

As someone said wait but realize that as with all new operating systems guaranteed something will not work...I installed it the first day available saw what would not work or worked poorly and the next day uninstalled it and delt with the issues it left me with for me it was a mistake for nothing was broken before Microsoft `improved` my life.....again
BTW it was my photo software after 10 that besides my antivirus that caused me the most grief oh yea my scanner in my aio won`t scan

Yesterday I read an article about windows 10, confirmed by MS Anything Free today is to good to be true. MS 10 Collects more data from your computer, than the NSA over all communications, It collects, passwords websites, time there, scans folders, one man had very bad experience, MS 10 went into his picture folder, and oops he had a folder with downloaded porn pictures, MS 10 somehow converted the pictures to screen saver mode slide show, His wife woke up to nude picture slideshow, he is currently in Dog house. After research I will keep 7 until I can trust anything more than auto pilot MS 10.

I figure I'll wait to put Win10 on my MacBook. There is now a Mac version of Quicken, so if they would make a WordPerfect for the Mac, I'd be all set.

According to a few posts and reviews I have seen, Windows 10 is breathing new life into MacBooks. Also kicking ass on O.S.X on some MacBooks....

What's O.S.X?

As I read it in most cases, now that MS has taken a stance on forcing updates to keep the computers that use the HOME version running correctly, 10 will be the same. Now, that's notwithstanding the fact that there have been glitches in some updates. I have always found those glitches which occur rarely are dealt with within days if not hours. Microsoft has a better record on not passing updates to the consumer that will negatively affect the computer than any other software program I know of, particularly third party antivirus software. Kapersky and McAfee are the worst. And guess who the computer manufacturers align with. Best royalty kickback to them from Norton, Kapersky and McAfee.

And for the cocky out there, Apple has made such errors as well.

I recommend going to the windows update site and checking your update history. Look for update # KB3035583. If not in your history you need to update your system .

Try this:
1. Go to Control Panel- From start
2. Under Taskbar & Start Menu - click on Customize icons on taskbar
3. At the very bottom of page - put a check in Always show all icons on the Taskbar
4.Close Control Panel & check the taskbar - bottom right
Is the Windows icon showing?

If it is, right click the icon and select :Get Windows 10 - don't worry it will not install it. Now double click the icon and select, Check My PC. I think you can figure out the rest. If not, send me a PM.

Good luck. Eventually, you will get a notification from MS (on your desktop, not email, that your download is ready. I just posted another article in CHIT CHAT, about my experience of installation today.

Keep trying it may work.
My son's Win7 Home Premium machine had a corrupted file and couldn't do downloads for the last couple months. I can't find the OEM disk to do a repair. The notice came today, I decided "What the heck. All it can do is say "failed". It ran once, took two hours getting ready, then failed, started again on its own and stopped before it was done, started a third time and asked if I wanted it to download and install, I clicked yes and it took about 1 1/2 hours but it finished and seems to be running fine. I was hoping that the Win10 install program could bypass the corrupted update file. It did. I was going to load the whole upgrade on a drive or CD and try that way, but didn't have to go that far.
