I have a 6 year old dell laptop with windows 7 home premium 64 bit and SP1 4.00 GB of ram and there are no new updates to be had. I have over 75% memory left. Can anyone please tell me why I can't get windows 10. I have searched the internet and can't get a straight answer.

I went through this for about a week. Every time the machine started, Win10 wanted to download, but it couldn't, and it didn't know why. Someone pointed me to a site where I can download it onto a flash drive and run the setup program from that. I started at 1:20 yesterday afternoon, and it was done by this morning. I had Acronis True Image 2011 on that machine, and I had to uninstall it and then start the setup all over again.

Luckily, I still have the link for the site where you can get the download. Choose the 32 or 64-bit version and take it from there. I installed it on a Dell XPS 8500 from 2012.

I've got the same thing and my Gateway is four years old. Troubleshoot says it doesn't have all the updates. It's been updated many times by them automatically.

I'll let the dust settle and pursue it later.

No, there is nothing in my task bar.

There is no windows icon in my task bar. They tell me my updates are not up to date but they are. Thanks Jerry for the site. I may have to take that route.

You might have to face the fact that your computer may be too old, or it may have components that are not compatible with Win 10. Also, if it does not have a legitimate copy of Win 7 or Win 8 on it, that could be cause for no free upgrade. Keep in mind, if your processor is old and not quite up to today's faster CPU standards, you may not want to upgrade to Win 10. This may cause your computer to be slower than a snail.

Even though I know that my computer could handle Win 10, I'm leary about the upgrade because I know that many things can go wrong. I don't want to spend my time asking questions as to why this or that doesn't work like it used to, or why I can't get some software to work, or why my video doesn't look right etc etc.

I got the taskbar icon on my old Dell, but when I went to upgrade it said "Your puny old computer will not run Windows 10." Well, not exactly that, but something similar.

The computer runs good but you are right, it is getting old and even if I could download windows 10 how long would it be before this old girl gives up the ghost. Maybe it's time to start looking around for a new one.

I had the insider version of Windows 10 running on a very old Optiplex that I bought referbed from Dell.

It came with XP Pro which I upgraded to 7. The computer breathed a sigh of relief when I installed 10.

Unfortunately, that computer is with my niece and nephew back in California and they did horrible things to it.

It's stuck on build 10449.

My wife's machine is an Optiplex GX620 32 bit that came with XP Pro in about 2005 or so. I put on Win 7 Pro. I am about to put in new hard drives since the old ones are slow and one is starting to "click" every so often. (I use Acronis 2015 for backups.) The software said it might have a video problem when it gets Win 10. Guess it is off to Best Buy for a video card.

I believe, Kraken, Win 10 requires a certain minimum screen resolution. One of my Win 7 computers did not qualify and that was the reason. You may want to check on this.

Try this:
1. Go to Control Panel- From start
2. Under Taskbar & Start Menu - click on Customize icons on taskbar
3. At the very bottom of page - put a check in Always show all icons on the Taskbar
4.Close Control Panel & check the taskbar - bottom right
Is the Windows icon showing?

If it is, right click the icon and select :Get Windows 10 - don't worry it will not install it. Now double click the icon and select, Check My PC. I think you can figure out the rest. If not, send me a PM.

Are you having problems with windows 7 ? If not don't go to win 10. If it ain't broke-----
