I'm moving from St Louis to Tampa in a week! It's a return trip for me as I went to high school in the sunshine state. Have totally documented Stl and now have a new opportunity. One of the trips I'd like to take is into the Everglades to do wildlife photography.

My understanding is that people have released pet Boa
s and Pythons there and they are taking over. Also want pics of gators.

My understanding is that this site is based in Miami. Has anyone done anything like this? Perhaps I should hire an airboat and a guide? Please advise.

I was in Fl about 10 years ago and I went to the Everglades to take some photos. I stayed in Florida City and I would drive to the Everglades on day trips. My favorite place for taking photos was at Royal Palm, at that time, the Anhinga Trail there was a boardwalk that went thru the area. From the trail I took lots of photos of gators, snakes, turtles, lizards and alot of different kinds of birds. I would try there before hiring a guide and airboat. Also, Janes Scenic Drive was a great place for getting shots of gators laying on logs in the swamp. It is along the Tamiami Trail between Miami and Naples. I think it was around the Big Cypress area.

BTW - Gators are absolutely everywhere in South Florida (and most of the rest of Florida for that matter). If you can't get decent shots of gators in Florida every time you leave your motel, throw away your camera. The risk is the lure of being able to get to close - they are usually docile, but are more dangerous than they look.

Also, be VERY careful not to step in a fireant nest - they look like mounds of sand next to the road or on trails. They will really spoil your day if you get into them

There are other snakes besides Boas and Pythons there. I don't know too much about snakes. But I do know, the wrong kind will kill you.

Air boat is the only way to see the Everglades...not just for safety, better vantage point if your lucky enough to sit on the Up-seat, even more fun if you get to pilot one. If it's equipped with an aircraft engine, you'll almost forget why you took the ride in the first place. (photography opps)

Boas & Pythons are more common the closer to Miami one is. On the west coast side near Naples they are less common.

LenA is correct...Rt. 41 is a great place to be able to take your time and see gators in the wild...was there this time last year and stopped at several road side parks. There were canals and streams with no less than 15-20 gators, gar fish and other species. I was able to photograph gators that were 8-10 feet away....so word of advice...have a lookout and make sure you have dry ground under your feet, and DO NOT wear flip-flops not good traction and hurts the gators digestion.lol

Yes, I remember hearing similar reports about the attitude of a crocodile is more vile than that of an alligator.

I was thinking that very thought when I saw that picture. I have never been to Florida but it is on my "Bucket List." I would love to shoot some shots of the wildlife there.
