I was USAF 1951-55. Aeromedical. At one time we were Top Secret. We worked with 82nd AB and others. Worked on invasion scenarieos. Used C-122's plus helicopters.

Had to Google the C-122. I thought I knew a lot about aircraft models, but that one had slipped by me;

The Blue Angles support plane is a C-130 "Fat Albert"
The current pilot happens to be female and is the first woman to fly with the team. They do some pretty amazing stuff with this very large aircraft. The first shot is with JATO assist, they don't do this kind of takeoff anymore. (credit Blue Angles)

The C-130 is an amazing machine with lots of turboprop power. A trick I did in my youth was to take off with no load, holding the aircraft on the runway until 137 knots (max safe wheel rotation speed) then yanking back on the yoke. I climbed to 800'(similar to a jet-assisted takeoff as shown in Bob J's images) before approaching stall and pushing the nose over gently. The guys in the tower at Fort Drum asked us to return and do it again. We had to decline.

The JATO takeoff is an awesome thing to see. Sorry to hear they don't do it any more, saw it at an airshow at Lakehurst Naval Air station in 2000.

From what I heard they (military) have run out of JATO bottles. Ok, I looked it up, here you go

Saw this on our walk last night. It was a long way away when I spotted it but got a fairly good shot.

Here's what our NC-130A looked like in the 1970's when I operated the raindrop spectrometer hanging under the port wing and the on board cameras during weather modification experiments at AFCRL. The next photo shows you the sad fate of most old government aircraft. Say a toast for the old bird as she held together and brought us back from quite a few "severe weather penetration" missions over Wallops Island. Hell, you might have drunk a beer out of her already.
