Not WWII. Engines are turboprops (Jet engine with a propeller on it) Still heavily used today. Used for cargo and airborne operations to this day.

In the late 70s I was skydiving with a group. The operation was run by a former 82nd AB Sgt. He arranged to have a couple of Hercs out of New England pick up some guys at Ft. Bragg and then fly them to Az. to do a mass drop.

That was quite impressive. Four Hueys dropped off teams to "secure" the area, two Hercs flying at about 1200 feet and a number of guys dropped across or DZ, and a load of guys having a great time.

That's the reason for my inquiry.

Flew across the Atlantic in one of those as a AF brat in '58. There were schoolbus seats anchored to the floor for us. Landed for refuel in the Azores. Then we came back in '61 in a Boeing 707, non stop.

I think you are referring to the external fuel tanks on the E and H models, for extended range. The current production J models are so fuel efficient that they do not need external tanks.

I was USAF 1951-55. Aeromedical. At one time we were Top Secret. We worked with 82nd AB and others. Worked on invasion scenarieos. Used C-122's plus helicopters.
Great fun ! Covered numerous "Exercises".

There is an Air National Guard unit in Scotia, NY, (just a few miles from Albany) that flies the only ski-equipped C-130s in the world. These are the planes which resupply the Antarctic bases in their summer (our winter) and in our summer still fly resupply missions to places in the artic.
The unit, which flies from the Stratton air base, also has a permanent unit in New Zealand from which they fly to the South Pole (remember when the airplane landed in dead of winter to rescue a researcher who had advanced cancer? That was them).... remarkable plane that can be adapted to almost any kind of mission.....

Yeah Definitely a C130. Flew on them many times. God awful long ride from Alaska to Wright-Patt AFB...

Yep, C-130 Hercules. Designed in the '50's. I worked on the B and E models from '65 to '68. Outstanding bird and a rugged workhorse.

Yep, a Lockheed Hercules C130. I had the pleasure of a couple of rides in 'em in the 70s, that was before they had composite 6 bladed props.

I don't know anything about planes, but these are very good shots, Henry!
