Was I a jerk?

It's 85 degrees fahrenheit here today. When I parked to go into Walmart I noticed the car beside me had left a dog in the car. Yes, the windows were open, but he was hot. When I came back out he was still there, but now he was under the steering wheel. I called the police and reported it. I took photos and sent them to the police station. Even though the windows were open it was too hot for a dog to be left in a car. If the police can't do anything this time, maybe they will at least talk to the owners and they will realize that it's better to leave the dog at home in this kind of heat.

No, you're not a jerk. Anybody that would leave an animal or person in a car on a hot day is a jerk. There have been many deaths resulting from this type of behavior.

Nightski - you did the exact right thing. If anyone says otherwise then they are as ignorant as the owner of the car. That is, quit simply, punishable cruelty.

You absolutely did correct by calling the police
They should take the dog away from them.
My wife and I had just finished dining at Olive Garden and were in the parking lot and saw a dog in a vehicle with the windows rolled down about 4". We went back in Olive Garden and asked the manager to make an announcement for the owner to come out to his vehicle, she refused . We called the police and waited until they got there. The announcement was made then and the guy came out. "Well I was only going to eat and be right back out", dumb ass!!!
We have not been back to an Olive Garden since and that happened about 2 - 3 years ago.

You absolutely did the right thing. Leaving an animal in the car on a hot day is cruel and people that are cruel to animals can easily be cruel to other people. Hopefully the police were able to talk sense into the owners.

Out here law enforcement agencies have broken windows in vehicles to remove not only dogs, but children as well. Sadly it happens every year. In the summer months temperatures can exceed 160 degrees inside vehicles. Perhaps it's true - you can't fix stupid! Well done.

I feel better. I wasn't sure since the windows were open, but when I saw him crawl under the steering wheel to escape the sun, I decided to call. I can't understand why people don't just leave their dogs home.

Children and dogs dehydrate quickly. Another tactic may be to call your local humane society shelter or county animal control. Sometimes they can respond faster.

Not only did the idiot leave the dog in the car, they left the keys in the ignition?
Perhaps they wanted someone to steal the dog along with the car.
Lock the stupid fools in the car for a while and see how they fare.
And to think these folks live and breath and heaven help us all they breed too ( usually like rabbits ).

No, you definitely are NOT a jerk. The owner of the dog is a jerk. I really get PO when I see this. Hopefully the owner gets charged. You deserve a huge thanks for calling it in!

From the looks of the car, their house trailer might not have been air conditioned and no more comfortable.
