How safe is it in Liberty State Park, NY in the wee hours? Especially toward the south end. I know that there are police patrols throughout the night but am looking for some hopefully first hand knowledge. I am interested in getting a time lapse of the sunrise over Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty but to do so I have to be set up and ready to shoot by 3:30 am till 7:30ish. I am assuming that quite a few photographers would use this location and hope that there is at least one there to keep company. :?:

That may be the safest time ... the pigeons should be asleep.

There is no open season on black males. There were 6,000 black youths killed last year by other blacks. Why is there no mention of this?
Also if you resist arrest, attack the officer or whatever you deserve to die. If the officer says stop you stop. If he says put hands behind your back do so. Guess what if they are wrong then go to court like humans do and file a complaint against the officer and obey the law. How simple is that. If you resist all bets are off.

I live in Jersey City and go to Liberty State Park at normal hours often.

I believe it is officially closed that early in the morning, however, there is no way to prevent people from going to the location you are talking about.

The attached is from the August Supermoon event. It was taken in that same area.

Check for a website http://www.libertystatepark.org/ is one.
It shows the hours of the park being 6am to 10pm.

If you want to be there early I would contact the local police or the state park police and let them know, so you won't be hassled, and may be protected.

Good luck with your efforts.

With a very few overpublicized spun to the left exceptions.....the cops are NOT the problem.

Yes an intelligent answer! I too live in Jersey and have had to work in Liberty State Park in the wee hours. There are always people there, especially this time of the year when the Stripers are moving up the Hudson. As Nike would say "Just do It!" Good Luck can't wait to see the pics!

I think its all over rated. The last time I was in New York City I just stayed in Central Park, grabbed my sleeping bag, found a nice spot and I stayed there for three nights - never an issue!

Certainly wasn't in the 60'/70's when I grew up in NYC. Around the mid 80's NYC started cleaning up the streets. Before that 42nd street use to be WILD to walk down and hang around in. Was like a circus. I came from a very bad neighborhood so 42nd street was like home. Liberty State Park at 3:30AM might be a little empty. So if there is some idiot looking for trouble you will be the target. Police at that hour are about to go off duty. So they may be sitting on some side street writing up their logs. Keep alert and very mobile. While not a good deterrent against a gun, bring pepper spray and maybe other people. Noise helps to I hear. Although gun shots from a perp are louder than a radio.

Hi Peter. I would make a few calls to both the police and the Park Rangers and talk with them. It is better to let folks know what you want to do. I have been confronted a few times here in Ohio in the parks. It is a sad time in this world. I am a licensed body guard, so I carry all the time. I keep my license up to date. I carry a 45 and 2 clips. And as long as I have a person with me, I am a body guard.:) Be safe my friend!!!

You can discuss all the police things you want, but down here in Tennessee, when I go out to any area that is even marginally unsafe, my .45 goes with me. I am too old to get mugged!

No city is that safe from 12pm to 6 am. Beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you must, be a party of 2 to 6 people. And use lots of common knowledge. Do not be alone with expensive equipment, you are only asking for it.

The New Jersey Constitution contains NO provision for the right to keep and bear arms. I suggest another shooting venue.
