How safe is it in Liberty State Park, NY in the wee hours? Especially toward the south end. I know that there are police patrols throughout the night but am looking for some hopefully first hand knowledge. I am interested in getting a time lapse of the sunrise over Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty but to do so I have to be set up and ready to shoot by 3:30 am till 7:30ish. I am assuming that quite a few photographers would use this location and hope that there is at least one there to keep company. :?:

Not sure anymore with the way the police are being abused they might be just backing off and leaving rough areas to the thugs in fear some clown will film the end of an attack on them and claim police brutality.
Do not want to sound downer but I would be "careful" anywhere now if you get my drift.

Simple way to find out.

Go to the nearest local police precinct to the location. Find someone who appears to be knowledgeable and perhaps in charge.

Tell them you plan to go to the area for about four hours before the sun comes up and loiter in the same area with about $3 to 5 thousand dollars worth of camera equipment. Ask if you will be safe.

After the laughter dies down, they will advise you.

Another simple way to find out.....

Just do it?

After thought.... I'm sorry... just could not resist.

You do know how it sounds?

In other words, the police should get a pass because their jobs are dangerous. Geesus, what utter nonsense.

Keep in mind:
Although Manhattan is exceptionally well patrolled by NYPD and is overall fairly safe at night, Liberty State Park is actually located in New Jersey and falls under Jersey City Police jurisdiction. The police presence may not necessarily be as good as it is in Manhatten.

I think its all over rated. The last time I was in New York City I just stayed in Central Park, grabbed my sleeping bag, found a nice spot and I stayed there for three nights - never an issue!

Well there is an old saying: God looks out for babies and fools. Don't press your luck. There is always room for a little common sense.

As a native New Yorker who has shot at all hours back in the day, even at 6'4" and a large format body, I never went anywhere alone in the late night/early mornings. Get a much younger facsimilie of me to go along. Be sure you have your phones and a large 5-cell flashlight/Baton combo.

And, as my dad usta say, "keep your head on a swivel."

I'd love to see the timelapse,
C

Just be careful about the police. If you are sneaking around in park at night they might just shoot you first and then check what you are doing :?

I admit police are not perfect. But I really do side with them lately from all the crap going on.
Over 40 have been shot so far this year.

Neither "side" has a monopoly on virtue and both have important issues that merit open and civil discussion. You siding with the police does not facilitate that discussion. Open season on the police is no more right than open season on young African-American men. The only side that should be taken is the right one. We face this issue precisely because of the "circle the wagons" mentality that you feed into and support. If you want to start citing numbers, how about going back to the inception of slavery and adding up how many black lives have been lost at the hands of law enforcement. This is about people doing the right thing. Not about counting the number of wrong things that have been done. Geesus. Your lack of insight is staggering.

Perhaps your evaluation is correct, but I will side with the police. fact is that more police have been killed by black men than black men by police.

There is no open season on black males. There were 6,000 black youths killed last year by other blacks. Why is there no mention of this?
Also if you resist arrest, attack the officer or whatever you deserve to die. If the officer says stop you stop. If he says put hands behind your back do so. Guess what if they are wrong then go to court like humans do and file a complaint against the officer and obey the law. How simple is that. If you resist all bets are off.

Possibly a good idea, but the police will never tell you that you will be safe. Suppose something happens. Would you be able to blame the police because they said you would be safe?

On the other hand, would the police tell you that they cannot do an adequate job of maintaining public safety, so you shouldn't go there?

No matter how much medical and camera insurance you have, you'd be taking a chance. How much of a chance is the big question. If you have half a dozen big guys with baseball bats, that might help.
