How safe is it in Liberty State Park, NY in the wee hours? Especially toward the south end. I know that there are police patrols throughout the night but am looking for some hopefully first hand knowledge. I am interested in getting a time lapse of the sunrise over Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty but to do so I have to be set up and ready to shoot by 3:30 am till 7:30ish. I am assuming that quite a few photographers would use this location and hope that there is at least one there to keep company. :?:

I think it's a good idea to take at least one other person with you for night photography anywhere. Two or three is better.

Possibly a good idea, but the police will never tell you that you will be safe. Suppose something happens. Would you be able to blame the police because they said you would be safe?

On the other hand, would the police tell you that they cannot do an adequate job of maintaining public safety, so you shouldn't go there?

No matter how much medical and camera insurance you have, you'd be taking a chance. How much of a chance is the big question. If you have half a dozen big guys with baseball bats, that might help.

Fortunantly here in PA I can carry my concealed 45 Govt. Auto and my 380 Govt. Auto when ever I go out regardless if it is "safe" or not. I feel sorry for the poor dupe that tries to take my equipment.

Be careful everyone. Your personal prejudices are coming through loud and clear. Some of your beliefs may have been founded many years ago but NY has cleaned up quite nicely. I have been to NY many times over the last 20 years and have found it a relatively safe place and yes I've been out at night many times. I have not been to Liberty Park but have been to Hoboken and Weehawken with no problems. I do note that none of you are from the area so how can you give an accurate appraisal of the safety of the place? I am also very aware that no matter how safe a place is in general there can always be a bad moment. I merely wish to make, as best as possible, an informed decision based on fact and not hearsay.

Perhaps your evaluation is correct, but I will side with the police. fact is that more police have been killed by black men than black men by police.

If you believe that statement, you are either delusional or just a plain idiot.

There is no open season on black males. There were 6,000 black youths killed last year by other blacks. Why is there no mention of this?
Also if you resist arrest, attack the officer or whatever you deserve to die. If the officer says stop you stop. If he says put hands behind your back do so. Guess what if they are wrong then go to court like humans do and file a complaint against the officer and obey the law. How simple is that. If you resist all bets are off.

Black on black violence is not the issue here. I realize that like many UHH posters, you have some difficulty remaining on task. First take your medication. Then try to understand the nature of the post.

I had been living in NYC for 38 years before I moved to CT. I can say I still love NY and it is safe going out to photography anywhere on day time. But I am not sure how safe at night because I had never went out at night except working night shift.

I agree to not being alone; you can not be aware of your surroundings while paying attention to your photography.

I like to take photos in places that some people will not go. Take someone with you that can pay attention to what is going on around you.

No-one will tell you its safe - life isn't
All you can do is minimize your risks.
Scout out your 'hide' in daylight and the closest route to get there. Preferably somewhere that is not easily seen from a distance.
Take a big quiet friend 'at the last minute' and leave 'as soon as possible'.
Keep your kit to the minimum and just carry bus fare and basic 'Loss-able'ID.
If in doubt walk away....even from your kit if that seems necessary.

This isn't negative advice...Do it but be careful. (The UK is no safer or less dangerous than anywhere else on a bad day)

Be quiet and enjoy the dawn Shhhhhhh

I absolutely agree. However, as I already stated, Liberty State Park is not in New York, but on the other side of the Hudson River, in Jersey City, New Jersey. What applies to New York City concerning safety may not necessarily apply to Jersey City.

Although I've passed through Jersey City a few times over the years, I honestly don't know about its crime rate, nor can I comment on the competence and vigilance of the Jersey City police department.

Neither "side" has a monopoly on virtue and both have important issues that merit open and civil discussion. You siding with the police does not facilitate that discussion. Open season on the police is no more right than open season on young African-American men. The only side that should be taken is the right one. We face this issue precisely because of the "circle the wagons" mentality that you feed into and support. If you want to start citing numbers, how about going back to the inception of slavery and adding up how many black lives have been lost at the hands of law enforcement. This is about people doing the right thing. Not about counting the number of wrong things that have been done. Geesus. Your lack of insight is staggering.

perhaps it is because young black males commit a majority of the crime in this country. just because a black man was shot does not mean the shooting is not justifiable. FYI the majority of cops in nypd as well as Baltimore are minorities. One of the two officers killed in missisipi was black as well as the 4 people arrested. The overwhelming number of blacks killed are due to black on black violence( gangs, drug deals, armed robberies etc) also more whites were killed by cops then blacks by over 10%. I would say YOUR lack of insight and lack of knowledge leads me to believe you are an aclu card carrying uberliberal living in the suburbs so doesn't have to fear crime. If you ever become a victim of crime, call the aclu or a community organizer rather then the police. if you cant show respect to law enforcement why should they show respect to you?

In other words, the police should get a pass because their jobs are dangerous. Geesus, what utter nonsense.

The police aren't worried about the danger; they're afraid of some jerk with a cell phone if they try to do their jobs.

Make it a dozen. And more than bats.
