What is the opinion of purchasing a pre-owned Nikon camera from Nikon or KEH?

I have never purchased directly from Nikon. KEH has exceeded my expectations several times. Generally, I have found their ratings to be generous. Perhaps they have realized two things:
1) Better to not incur the expense of a returned item
2) Better to create a positive customer base

I agree, KEH is excellent used. For Factory Refurbished try Nikon Store also B&H and Adorama have both used and Factory Refurbished. ;)

I purchased a refurbed SB-600 flash from the Nikon Store - been great for over a year now - no complaints.

I have purchased a factory refurbed Nikon camera from Cameta Camera - was great, no problems/no complaints.

I hear good things about KEH.

I would have no issues buying factory refurbed from Cameta, Nikon, Adorama, KEH or B&H.

If you buy refurb get a FACTORY refurb. :)

I have bought several refurbished camera bodies and lenses from B&H. I've never had a problem with anything I've bought from B&H new or refurbished.

I have purchased Nikon SB700 flash & 50mm f/1.4 lens refurbished from the Nikon store. Both arrived like they were never been used = new. The only 'downside' is limited 90 days warranty compared to much more for new models. But price is lower...

A box sticker of "Refurbished" can only be issued by the manufacturer. As an example, a Refurbished Nikon camera means that Nikon actually handled the camera (or lens or speedlight) and certifies it as basically "good as new". Quite often, Refurbs ARE new, but previously sold, then returned to Nikon. Once sold, the camera cannot be legally re-sold as "new". Hence Refurbished. The accompanying warranty is from Nikon. Returned store floor examples fall into the same category.

A retailer can only re-sell a camera as used, no matter how new or little used, but cannot call it "Refurbished" without documentation from manufacturer. Quite often a store will provide their own version of "warranty", matching the same conditions of manufacturer's warranty if new.

In August of last year I bought a refurbished Nikon D7100 from the Nikon Store. It had 215 shots on the sensor. I now have just south of 7,000 and have had no problems with it at all. The problem has been finding enough time to use it.

When buying a Refurbished by Nikon DSLR, how high an activation count is considered resonable. For example if the shutter is expected to be good for 150,000 activations and it has 50K -60K, is it best to look for something with less. At that point its reached the 40% mark, and all componets have had significant usage.

Most of the time a refurbished camera has fewer than 500 clicks. They are cameras that are at camera shows and expositions around the country. Some of them might have only 2 or 3 clicks.

I just bought a used item from KEH. I went through Amazon and the item ordered which was a SB16B got switched to an A. There was no problem righting the wrong and all was made right with in a week, from original order to the correcting of the mistake. Very honorable company.

No problem with Nikon on refurbished units. I have never dealt with KEH but heard they are excellent to deal with. I have purchased a factory refurbished Nikon lens also from BUYDIG, with no issues, as they are a Nikon Authorized Dealer. The two keys for refurbished are that it includes a USA warranty and that it was FACTORY refurbished. I believe that only Nikon Authorized Dealers can sell these products.
