Thanks. I've never quite understood why people don't like the hex plates. They may look clunky, but it feels like they would support a Russian tank...

Yes ! I agree, but they are cheap - with no snob appeal .....

I have friend, a musician who plays hammer dulcimer very well. On the recommendation of her instrument maker she uses a decent camera tripod instead of the regular musical instrument stands, and guess what, there's a hex plate on the underside of her instrument....
