I have a mixture of Sirui and Fotopro longer base plates that are cheap and work. Similar to these:

I use this with my 500. A little long but it works for me.

I have a Sirui PH-20 tripod head that I use for my Canon 500mm lens. I use the plates that came with the head, but last time in Yellowstone, a photographer had an extended plate that gave his lens more stablilty by having a longer surface area. Lucky him..his friend had made it for him.
Any ideas on where I would get a longer plate. Have not seen any on the obvious sites. Thank you.

Re' your enquiry, I have a Miranda tripod {have had this stable ’pod for about 7yrs} & could also be interested in a similar QR plate. My question is, are QR plates to tripods a compatible standard fit dimension, or will I be searching for a one off fit for my ‘pod?

Sirui appears to use standard Arca-Swiss sytle quick release lens plates. If so, this is the most standardized type and there are many manufacturers: Kirk Photo, RRS, Wimberley and many, many others. A quick Amazon search found 365 results! (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=lens+plate+arca)

Measure the length of your lens plate and pick something longer.

I suggest looking for a plate that has an anti-twist feature... either a lip or a second screw. The Canon EF 500mm has means of attaching two screws and I think that would be preferable, but may need a special plate to best accommodate it.

Wemberly is just one of the many companies that have long (all kind of length) Acra Style plates in their program!

Frequently, heads that are made for the heavier video cameras have that larger plate you're looking for. Video heads will typically fit standard tripods, so you should be able to switch out the head that came with your tripod and replace it with a video head.

The head in question is a gimbal head and with a 500mm lens it's the best choice. I don't think that the tripod came with that head.

Will this plate fit your head? http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-500PLONG-Video-Camera-Plate/dp/B00DQNZ2HO/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Thanks for the info and no it won't fit the ARCA SWISS mount of the gimbal head. I do have that plate but for a Manfrotto head and tripod.

One of the things I use is a macro slider beween the lens and the QR plate - allows quick easy adjustment for balance - also acts as a carrying handle of sorts. Cost ? about $15 on ebay. You will need longer screws to mount it properly and maybe even a spacer to facilitate it's use as a handle.

I also mount a 2 inch by 14 inch by 1/8 inch aluminum bar stock under the lens to act as a stabilization handle. See below.

Interesting. You have those old Bogen/Manfrotto RC0 hex QR plates I think. A while back I got a good deal on a Gitzo 5541LS and got used Bogen 3038/3039 heads to go with it. The hex plates seem to work, but many don't seem to like them.

I've just been getting some arca clamps and plates from Amazon (mostly) to adapt them, and they look similar to your approach. I have other tripod mounts etc, but the inexpensive arca clamps seem like a good way of standardizing and so far the inexpensive ones seem pretty good, at least for the money. There seem to be a wealth of different sized plates available inexpensively from Neewer and others.

Anything wrong with that approach? Theoretically it seems sound and relatively inexpensive....

Not a big fan of arca swiss - greatly prefer my solutions. I like the fact that when I put the Manfro mount in the Manfro clamp - it locks in the same position every time - then with the macro slide, can be adjusted on the fly with great range.

I use the Manfro hex plate because my monopod uses a 3063 fluid head and also a heavy duty ball head with that mount - and they work good with the macro slide - and it was all CHEAP !
