I always seek a concensus from a variety of online reviewers and take each reviewers information with a grain of salt. Over time you begin to understand their individual preferences and prejudices, and which review sites and reviewers seem consistent with your own point of view. Even Ken Rockwell, for all his inconsistencies and questionable opinions, has a lot of useful information. You just need to be knowledgeable enough to know which info to keep and which to ignore. That's not easy, especially for newbies and often the not so newbie. That's why you'll often see the personal opinions of online reviewers presented here as absolute fact which often leads to nasty debate.

Ah yes, the nasty debates! I do think though, a newbie can receive a good understanding from Ken R, and like you stated, there is good to be learned from many out there.

Absolutely. While I'm not a fan of Rockwell, certainly he presents a lot of useful info. For many it's more black and white. People seem to love him or hate him. I take a more pragmatic view and take the good and discard things I don't agree with. He might, as an example, present a lens review that supports what others have said, or he might suggest an issue that no one else has mentioned. Either way, it adds to my overall knowledge base and I can chose to accept or ignore whatever he writes. But for newbie who can't read between the lines, it's a difficult process. People tend to believe whatever they read on the internet if it supports their belief system. As a result, Rockwell is often quoted as a source for those who believe there is no advantage to shooting raw.
I think subconsciously i am more jealous of his hair, mine looked similar to his 40 years ago !!

I had hair once too...
I also grew up in Philly, and there's a certain attitude that goes with that. This is why I escaped from there in 1981.

In the interest of ensuring quality in my own videos, I would appreciate any specific examples you might be able to provide as to his incorrect advice.
I think Fro is a fraud. He has succeeded only because he puts out so many Youtube videos. He is a hard worker but full of nonsense. After his abysmal appearance on the Scott Kelby show I highly doubt if he will ever be asked back to the show. He was making fun of many famous photographers (Hurley) and just showed an astounding lack of class. This guy is a first class jerk and a waste of time to listen to. I gave up on him after two of his episodes.

Ah, the love or hate relationship! Seems that Rockwell and Polin have their followers and haters. I have always gather something from each and others too. Yes, his interview with Scott Kelby was one of his best, in my opinion. If you shoot RAW and RAW only, the Fro is the man to listen too. He despises everything else. I personally don't enjoy when he bashes others and that shows his weakness. There are many on youtube that have great videos. I enjoy Matt Granger, the Nikon Guy, now called Get Your Gear Out.

For all we know, he might just be acting the way he does, for the camera (audience). I presume lot of folks might be enjoying a bit of antics on utube type short productions. This is seen not just in photography but other subject matters, as well. And why utubesque presentations alone, we see that in live presentations etc too.

Annoying? Arrogant?? Giver of wrong advice??? Sounds like he'd fit right in here at UHH.
IMHO of course.

Short productions? Haven't you noticed that at least half of his videos are longer than an hour, some longer than two hours? When you watch somebody for an hour or two on repeated occasions, you get a genuine view of the person unless he is a trained actor.

OMG, How did I ever make that kind of error? To me, that's like calling Galen Rowell Gary. Thank you for the correction and my apologies to Jared.
And yes, I admire the man's business acumen, humor and technical skill. As far as his photography goes, I admire the principles by which he stands, as well as his understanding that others may wish to follow different paths. I do believe that, like many modern photographers, he tends to underexpose at times, but that could just be these old eyes. The only other problem I have with him is language, but I guess I'm a bit old-fashioned.
And you have to love Postman Fro!
