Rarely discussed in forums full of "advanced" users like this is the simple mode in Photoshop Elements. Adobe calls it "Quick". The crop tool is on the left. The exposure and color adjustments are simple sliders OR thumbnail buttons on the right. The picture is in the middle.

Newbie question. Is there a simple photo post processing software system that doesn't have a lot of options to learn. All I want to do is crop, lighten-darken, change saturation, and maybe hue. I have used 15 year old Agfa Photowise and I like its simplicity, but cannot find an updated (Windows) version. I have tried to learn GIMP but find it has so many options with masks etc. that it takes a lot of time just to make small adjustments. I am just learning digital. I have experience in 35mm but have not had to do post processing with chromes. Your advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I "third" Picasa.

(Edited to fix after posting: I see I'm the fourth to recommend Picasa, so I have to "fourth" Picasa).

There are two very good FREE programs that I recommend to my photo students, Picasa and FASTSTONE. Each provides easy to use editing options and each has some advantages over the other. But be careful downloading them, there are some websites that provide a lot of crappy stuff along with the program. Make sure you download from the official site.

Try Picassa. I really liked it when I was learning, and I still do.

I have been using Faststone for about 10 years. It is free, does all you have listed, plus much more. They do publish a free set of instructions, but the layout of the main page is very easy to use.
