What is your opening -lightroom users?

I just got a new computer with Win8.1, and it makes it that much more difficult to get it set up because I can't zip around it the way I can with Win7. I got a little program that restores the Start button, so that helps a bit (for $10.00).

Of course, my problem is that I know how to use Win7, so Win8.1 is a challenge because it's substantially different.. In either case, when Win10 comes out, you will be able to get it for free.

If you shop around, you can still buy Windows 7 Professional machines. I would not buy Windows Home Premium. I HATE Windows 8. Lightroom will run in either. Adobe products run better with at least 8 GB of RAM and a dedicated video card with at least 1.5 GB of its own video RAM. I'd recommend at least an Intel Core i5 processor.

It really doesn't matter. Windows 8.1 is fine, and you can have it boot into the Classic Desktop, bypassing all the 8.1 tile garbage.

Whats the web site to do this. Thanks

Go with the Windows 8.1. You're going to have to learn it at sometime anyway, if not this computer, then the next one. And it really, truly, is not that hard to figure out. Lightroom or any of the Adobe products will run just fine on Windows 8.0 or 8.1.

Then groom it to be the way you want it. That's what I did.
Because I want my computer to be all business and no bubble gum.
So I found my way around the Apple-esk desktop of Winderz 8, and built my own custom desktop that has what I want on it.
And my computer opens to that desktop.
Just the things I want to see, and none of the candy coated BS of Apps I will never use.
Windows 8 is fine, but people who can't run their own computer give it a bad rap.
You need to work to stay current, not pigeon hole yourself in dieing software that isn't supported anymore. No matter how comfortable it seems.

But of course, there is always Apple for those who never had a clue in the first place, or desire to have the Apple store work their voo-doo on their ailing machines....

Life is full of choices.
Windows 8, or 8.1 in my case. br Then groom it to ... (show quote)

8.1 is just fine. In fact, it's really a good system and you can open it with the traditional desktop, or the "tiles" that MS wanted to convert us to.
You can toggle between the two with the Windows key next the CTRL key.

I had that program, or one similar with Win 8. You don't need it with 8.1 because you can set it up to get the Start menu or Tiles.

Win 8 got bad press because they screwed with the desktop when they first came out. They had an epiphany from getting the shit kicked out of them and put it back in as 8.1 which is simply an update.

Don't go backwards. I have been on 8 with LR 5 and both have run flawlessly for year and I take all updates. In addition, if you go to 7 you will end up losing service when 9 or whatever comes next. There are also software changes in the OS 8 to take advantage of the newer hardware.

Rather than concern over the OS make sure you gets lots of memory and if speed is primary, maybe a solid sate hard drive.

Please note I loved Win 7 and went through this same quandary. I spoke with some techie guys and friends that service computers(and would not lie to me) and got the straight skinny. I admit, I had to do some homework to learn the differences but it was not that bad.

Good Luck.

Good advice, don't go backwards, get as much ram as you can, and shoot for an SSD. Now, I am NOT a Windows user any more, switched to Mac long ago, but the advice is right on.

I'm running a final back-up before installing the beta of Windows 10. They recommend you do that before the download of the Preview.

Thats a misnomer - you do not necessarily get more for the buck, but it is your choice ;)

I used to think the same way...

Try building your own Mac.

I am so scared of new technology, that I never try anything new. I hear so many stories about how poor Win. 8 is, that I'm sticking with win 95. My bag phone still works somewhat and I still enjoy my 62 Chevy.
