I'd appreciate some suggestions for a nice all purpose lens for everyday use for the D90. Maybe a step above the 18-105 that usually sells with this camera. Have the 70-300 telephoto.

I us the 18-200 (Nikon) quite a bit and find it to be adequate.

Unless you need a faster lens, I highly recommend the 24-120 f/4. If you want a bit faster, smaller and lighter the Sigma 17-70 is excellent. In addition, the 18-105 is one of the best kept secrets in the Nikon line-up; light, sharp and cheap.

I have the 18-105 VR & 70-300 VR, but after buying an 18-200 VR ll for a trip to Kauai, this lens is what I use 90 percent of the time. Great lens for everything except birds in flight, and close ups of grizzly bears.

Nikkor 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 should do it for you. Has VR.

Nikkor 18-300mm f3.5-6.3

I love this lens. It's my walkaround for my D90, although useless for FX.

I am going to say that the 18-105 is a nice kit lens and very useful as a walk around lens. Knowing exactly what will be the use of the new lens makes for a better advise.

So many good ones. Give some thought that if you may upgrade to a full frame that you consider buying a DX lens now. It Will be fine now on D90 and set you up for savings down the road. I still have a D90 with the two lenses you mentioned and the took a lot of wonderful pictures. Upgraded to 610, only because I could, and had bought some DX glass. But the fastest, best glass you can. Consider used on eBay or adorama. I have done well at both.

There are two ways you can go. You can go for a lens like the Nikon 18-105 VR, Nikon 18-140 VR, or Sigma or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. Any of these would make a nice kit with your 70-300. The 17-50 f/2.8 lenses are good in low light, but you may find yourself switching a lot between it and the 70-300. The 18-105 and 18-140 should reduce the lens switching.

The other option is an all-in-one lens, also called a superzoom. This includes lenses like the Nikon 18-200 and 18-300, the Sigma 18-250 and 18-300, and the Tamron 18-270 and 16-300. These lenses cover a lot of range and just about eliminate the need for changing lenses. However they are not as sharp, especially at the long end, as using two shorter ratio zooms like the lenses listed above. Some find them to be sharp enough and others don't.

A lot also depends on your budget. The 18-105 VR can be gotten refurbished by Nikon for $200 whereas a new Nikon 18-300 runs almost $900. A good value all-in-one is the Sigma 18-250 Macro OS HSM for $350. Check the prices at B&H for new lenses and keh.com for used lenses. Any price significantly lower than theirs should be viewed with caution.

BTW, which 70-300 do you have? There are three different Nikon 70-300 lenses, and there are several independent brands that make 70-300's.

I have a Sigma 10-250 on my D90 and am very happy with it. In fact I rarely take it off. It is a great all around lens.

Perhaps you should consider the AF-S DX NIKKOR
18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II which is about 1/6 th the price of the 17-55 and a lot smaller, much lighter weight, very sharp but slower (max at f/3.5 - 5.6). Compare the 17- 55 and the 18 - 55 on the Nikon USA website. Get what works best for you. Take your camera to a local shop and try them out. Good luck and happy shooting.

I love the 18-200 lenses. My daughter is "borrowing" my D90. After she broke the 18-105 that was on there and kept badgering me to use my 18-200 Nikon, I bought a used 18-250 Tamron from KEH for the camera. Now she doesn't bug me. I also just got an 18-200 Sony lens for my a6000.

The 18-200 zoom is enough to cover most situations for a carry around lens. Sure, occasionally a 10mm would be nice and getting a shot of that seagull 500 feet away could use a 3-400. But for 98% of my photography that 18-200 does a great job.
