I'd appreciate some suggestions for a nice all purpose lens for everyday use for the D90. Maybe a step above the 18-105 that usually sells with this camera. Have the 70-300 telephoto.

Give some consideration to the 18-200. My experience with it is that it is a very decent all around lens.

By all purpose are you referring to an all-in-one lens like an 18-200 or 18-300?

I'm asking what would be your suggestion of a good lens to purchase in addition to the 70-300 that I already have. Thanks!

What do you like to photograph?
What would you like to photograph in the future that you do not photograph now?

Landscape, friends & family shots, Xmas morning. My daughter may also be using it for a high school photography class - they require a dslr.

The 24-120 is a great walking around lens.

Is the 70-300mm your only lens?

The 18-105 is pretty nice, But I like the Sigma 17-70 with some speed at 2.8-4 - and sharpness ! - and it dovetails perfectly with the 70-300 .....

Yes, that's the only lens I have at this time. The Nikkor 17-55 also has been recommended but I don't know much about it.

If you need the range and relatively fast aperture, the 17-55 is the best DX zoom Nikon makes. (I have 2 of them)
Back when Nikon didn't have a full-frame camera, this was a must-have lens.
Professional build & image quality.
It's not inexpensive, but you do get what you pay for.
No VR, but the shorter lenses really don't need it, in my experience.
Several used ones for sale HERE.

The Nikon side of my family grabbed a used 17-55mm f/2.8 DX this year. This is a very nice lens. Sharp, fast, great colors and built like a tank. Expensive even used.

I like a constant aperture lens. Look at the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 lens. I had an 18-200mm Nikon and switched to the Sigma and was very happy.
