Whenever I have a little extra money, I make a donation to the ASPCA, or perhaps a spay and neuter clinic.

I'm happy that you are passionate for your cause but I intend to be purely selfish with this gift and purchase something for myself. I've had a not so great week and believe that I deserve to spend it souly on myself.

As a mother of 3, it rarely happens.

Really silly question!
$50 is not much these days but it will get a bucket of fruit and cheese and a bottle of wine.

I check out the charities that I donate to on CharityNavigator.org before I make a donation. I look for those with a 4 star rating and find some that have less than 5% of the income that is spent on administration and fund raising. That way I know my donation goes to the cause and not to solicit more income and pay for high administration costs.

Check out Matthew 25: Ministries if you want to see a top charity. They have 0.3% administration & fundraising expense.

Another suggestion: a Kodak Wratten filter number 90 (or it's equivalent) will assist you in seeing tones. They are about $35-50.

I try to buy what I think I will use the most, or add the best bang for the buck.

With all the great ideas on here, you'll need a $500 gift certificate-- but then that opens it up to: which lens?
