Never used the histogram on my Nikon. What does this tell me?

This article provides a fairly complete explanation and description of the use of a histogram in digital photography.

So now that i have figured out how to get the histogram on the screen i have another question. When looking at the histogram, the main thing i am looking for in this is to make sure it is not spiking off the edges of black and white, and that there should be a little space on each end to have proper exposure.

Is this correct

You obviously didn't get the optional "Magic Button."

The button she is pushing is probably the depth of field preview button. This shuts down the lens to the opening it will use to take the photo. If you don't like the appearance, you can change the aperture.

Using a large aperture (small number, like f/2.8), will give you a narrow depth of field, so not much more than the subject will be in focus.

Depth of field is explained on page 64 of your manual, but it looks like the D5100 does not have a DoF preview button.
