I just bought my 5100 a few days ago, and i am having trouble getting the histogram on screen for viewing. I have looked over the manual and i must be missing something because i can't find out how to get up. Can anyone help with this?

When viewing your shots, push the multi-directional/function switch (the ring part) next to the LCD down once or twice. This will cycle through view modes: just the photo, photo w/exif data. photo w/histogram. Not sure of the order - I have the D40, but it works the same. My battery is on charge and I can't look at it ATM.

I also recently bought a 5100. Another useful feature indicates over exposed highlights. They flash black in another playback setting

You might want to buy David Bush's Compact field guide for the Nikon 5100. I keep it in my camera bag. There is also a 400 page edition. What lenses did you get with the camera?

I just bought the frame for now. I have an 18-55 nikkor and a Tamron 70-300 that came with my3000. So i will be using them for awhile.

On the D70/70s, you push right to control the histogram. On the D7000, you push down. This guarantees that I never get it right as I switch from camera to camera.

Thanks for posting today, I will be checking out the camera at work tomorrow to see if I can get this set up...otherwise can I give you a shout out to help me? We have not had the camera very long, and I have been trying to figure this out a couple of times without success...manuals were no help at all ugh. Happy snappin we really like what we are getting so far with the D5100.

just remember that the histogram is based on the jpeg scene, it may not be as bad when viewing the raw file....just fyi..no big deal

Thanks for saying this, I did not know since I do not shoot in raw as of yet since I don't have enough RAM for the PSE9 that I purchased...did it kind of backwards and have the program and no computer to put it on....looking forward to yet another challenge sometime soon I hope. Computer shopping I am.

This article provides a fairly complete explanation and description of the use of a histogram in digital photography.
