My son is getting married in March and i have just bought a Nikon d-5100 upgrading from my d-3000. I am looking for something to take photos at his wedding and i am having trouble figuring out what lens to buy to get the good images. Can anyone point me in the right direction.
I have seen post showing 85mm but being fairly new i would like to have something that autofocuses. As well as seting f-stop with camera instead of manual. i am afraid of screw ups at this point going all manual.
My concern with the preorde is i am not sure if it will get here in time. I understand that there is a problem with getting stuff from overseas right now.
my son is getting married around the 10th we will be leaving on the 10th to head that way and that is cutting it too close.

Production is underway and shipping to the US is set to begin the middle of February, 2012. Biggest dealers usually get the first shipments but all authorized dealers will have them within a week of each other.
Quite honestly, if you are not even sure which lens to get, you may be getting in over your head. You need to be totally at home with your gear; able to use it without thinking; and well aware of what different lenses can do. An 85 is quite long: I've found very little use for 75-85-90 lenses at weddings.
If however you are determined, you might find the following to be of some use:

Cheers,
R.
i am not set in stone on the 85, and i don't mind using flash just that is what i have been seeing as the most common way to go. i am looking for suggestions. I only have couple of lenses right now nikkor 18-55 and an tamron 70-300 and i am not sure these will work for what i want to do.
If you resort to flash please don't use your on-camera flash. The results will be LESS than flattering, especially to the bride. The 18-55mm Nikkor takes nice pics when used with an off camera flash, perhaps invest in a bracket that mounts to your tripod screw hole and moves your flash up and away from the lens, and attach it to the camera with a cord, like the SC-17.

Are you going to be the official wedding photographer?
How are you going to be in the family shots? The family shots are some of the most important photos of the day.
Yes i will be the main photographer. this is not a big formal wedding. i will be using a remote in some images. this will not be a hurry and plan all shots, if you understand me here, so i will have plenty of time to get the setup correct. it is just basically a small family thing.
I use the Nikon 18-55 Wide Angle Lens with a SB 600 Flash. It puts the shadows behind the people your taking pictures of. This is a picture of my two nieces that I took a couple months a go. My advice is to hire it done or find a good friend who knows how to take your pictures. You will need to be less stressed at your childrens wedding.
As I see it blown up, I notice shadows at their feet. To me it's still a good shot. I stood in the background and took it right after the Professional took one.
I think it is a great shot. I also have several people in the family that are excellent at taking photos, and i will be using them as well to help out.
Good luck Norman, I look forward to seeing some of your shots.
