Great site. I loved the review & examples given on the 50mm lens.

This is an excellent site that shows the effects of different focal lengths on a single subject size. As for weddings, you may want to shoot just a little down on the subject to alleviate double chins and using multiple flashes can help alleviate shadows depending on the ambient lighting. Also watch out for glasses and make sure they are tilted in a such a way as not to reflect ambient light to the camera nor flash light to the camera, ie make sure the normal to the eyeglass lens is not splitting the light source to lens axis angle.

I have shot many weddings using a Canon 50 1.8, Sigma 17-50 2.8 and a Sigma 70-200 2.8. I mostly shoot in manual and always shoot in Raw. Manual mode allows you to control the the lighting problems and Raw allows you to sometimes bring back a bad photo in Photoshop. Keep track of available light, always, always use the fastest shutter speed you can and take tons of photos and you will be fine.

Great advice. I wish I had it when I was asked to shoot my first wedding. But don't forget the tripod & remote.

my son is getting married around the 10th we will be leaving on the 10th to head that way and that is cutting it too close.

I do shoot a lot of weddings and charity events ( Ie Amrican Cancer Society, Relay for Life, etc. / Sincre I shoot with Cannon equipment ,my go to lens is the L 24-105.f 4.0 .This lens will allow me to shoot almost 95 percent of any shoot. A 100mm f- 2.8 macro lens completes this set.
In addition to getting your individual portraits, couples shots, and group formal portraits you get to take them all with just one lens.TRUE YOU LOOSE SAY 2 F-STOPS but with todays cameras a simple change of ISO is all that is needed.
With a faster fixed prime lens such as the 85mm f 1.8 lens you get a great portrait lens however for full length or group formal portraits unless you have a great deal of room from subjects to photographer(distance) you just won't get full length shots. Don't miss understand me it is a perfect lens to shoot head and shoulders or even 1/2- 3/4 length shots again if you can move back far enough.
In my oppinion you would do much better to consider the Nikkor 24-85 f 2.8-40 lens.
Why ? Let me tell you . Even though it is slower in light gathering ,it will give you more freedom to compose your subject matter. Imagine shooting full length shoots as well as head and shoulder shots, even large group shoots without moving back to get them all in.You must spend your time arranging all of your formal shots during the formal possing session and once you have them set up you don't want to worry about composing the image and not oh no ,I gota move back. There's not enough of the group in my finder.
With a zoom lens you simply rack the lens in or out without having to move back (most of the time )
In closing the 24-85 f2,8 - 4.0 AF lens gets some good reviews and may certainly be worth looking at ,unless all you really want is the tight head and shoulders shooting that the Nikkor 85mm f - 1.8 provides.
I simply rendered my oppinion and oppinions are like noses, everybodys got one! 8-)
PS Are you using a flash?
