In the olden days there were SLRs, TLRs, Rangefinders, Folders, Box Cameras, and view cameras. There were often subsets of each of these types. Like the press camera, was a sheet fed camera like a view camera, but it had a rangefinder to make it faster handing.

The SLR: single lens reflex has a single lens through which you see the image by dropping a mirror in the light path between the lens and film.
The TLR: twin lens reflex has two lenses, one "taking lens" for the film image, and a second viewing lens that site in front of a mirror to reflect the image up to a screen for the photographer to frame the image.

Given modern electronics, the idea of the Mirrorless camera has come into its own. Probably more closely related to a view camera in function than any other film camera, but with every modern convenience added.

I got my first two Digital cameras 1995, by Apple. Less than 1 MegaPixel. I was teaching 7th & 8th graders and introducing them to Photoshop. Good times.

SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras go way back and use film only.

DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras, as the "D" implies, are digital and capture images to a sensor and then transfers the images to a card for later processing.

It's that simple. first came SLR cameras. I bought my first SLR in 1968. Then came DSLR cameras. I bought my first DSLR in 2011.

DSLR digital. SLR working with film.

With early DSLR, those of us from a film SLR background were not happy with the "feel" of the digital images. Over the years the digital has become equal to or better than film.

Advantages of digital are far more sensitivity, far less cost to shoot and post-process.

Also, there is the ability to manipulate the raw image much more than a film negative and print.

Film production and processing is very detrimental to the environment (We didn't realize this back then.) not that production of digital chips is great, just much better over the lifetime.

boberic. Oh did you bring back memories. My first paying job was in the early '50s with the best camera I've ever had. My TLR (I'm sure this will confuse the youngsters) , a Hasselblat? (I've forgotten how to spell it). It was shooting a water show, capturing divers and swimmers. it paid $21 + costs of materials and I had to drive 90 miles to get there. The producer had dozens of the shows 8x10s all over his office walls until he died in 2007.

And the darkroom where sheer genius took over. Making dark faces lighter, light faces darker. Altering backgrounds. Being creative with the projector lens. On and on. Even putting up with the fungus under your nails was worth it. Those old 'farts' really had to know what they were doing.

Today we put the DSLR on auto and get more and better pictures with 1/10 the work and cost. I love it, but I miss those memorable years.

I thought Hasselblad only made medium format SLRs. Popular TLRs of the day would have been the Franke & Heidecke Rolleicord and Rolleiflex series, Welta, Zeiss-Ikon, Voightlander, Mamiya, Yashika, and Minolta Autocord. Kodak, Argus, and Ansco had lower cost TLR cameras and also sold some rebranded imports that were pretty nice.

The biggest difference is that you can take 100's of pix with DSLR without worrying about how much you will pay for film or developing. If you have worked in a darkroom, digital pix are easier and faster to modify where your wife can keep an eye on youÂ… hmm, that might not be a plus. lol

Yeah, one hidden advantage of film is the peace and quiet (except for your favorite music) in the darkroom. When she knocks you can say without getting into trouble:
"Don't open the door, I'm busy!!!" My girlfriend used to say if I spent any more time in there my skin would turn gray.

Mine used to say that if I spent another 5 seconds in there I'd be sleeping with my hand that night!
I never spent a night alone, but boy, did I waste a lot of paper!!

Whoops, forgot there are youngsters present. Please strike that from your memory!!
