Hi Rdv. I bought my first SLR ~ 1964. It was a Sears and Roebuck
made by Ricoh {spelling}.
You must be old as don't know what [like me].

SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras go way back and use film only.

DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras, as the "D" implies, are digital and capture images to a sensor and then transfers the images to a card for later processing.

It's that simple. first came SLR cameras. I bought my first SLR in 1968. Then came DSLR cameras. I bought my first DSLR in 2011.

Nobody has mentioned TLR. Good cameras but if you took a head and shoulders portrait of your girlfriend all you get is a great shot of her boobs if you forget to raise the camera before pressing the shutter release.

Not quite that drastic. most of the nicer cameras had a parallax guide in the finder to reduce your chances of chopping off the top of someone's head. and for much higher precision, there were position adjusting devices sometimes called a "paramender" that precisely raised the camera the distance between the lenses. so you could focus with your viewing lens then this gadget exactly transposed the taking lens into that spot.

I used a rolleicord and a yashicamat 124g quite a bit.

Have you even read the thread at all????
Because I counted 11 different posts prior to yours that mention TLR cameras.

Maybe what you really meant was, "Hey I'm too lazy to read the thread, but I want to sound as if I really know what I am talking about, so I'll just assume that no-one has mentioned them, and answer along those lines."

Where do you get film for it? I was told decades ago they were going to stop making it.
One of my little sisters got my film camera, tripod, & darkroom stuff eons ago. (With my blessings.)
But that camera got me through my high school daze.

I'm happy to be in this digital age. Gives me plenty to do, and if I don't like it, delete. Then shoot something else.
I shot almost 500 frames of our friends kids the other day. Deleted 60, and kept the rest. I'll put them on a card or thumb drive, and let their Mum have them to play with.
(The way things are going, most likely an SDHC card. Even thumb drives are getting dated.)

there are many companies manufacturing film. you can go to freestylephoto.biz and get all the 120 colour and black and white film you little heart could desire.

incorrect SS. digital imaging devices are primarily computers with lenses attached as an afterthought.

With early DSLR, those of us from a film SLR background were not happy with the "feel" of the digital images. Over the years the digital has become equal to or better than film.

Advantages of digital are far more sensitivity, far less cost to shoot and post-process.

Also, there is the ability to manipulate the raw image much more than a film negative and print.

Film production and processing is very detrimental to the environment (We didn't realize this back then.) not that production of digital chips is great, just much better over the lifetime.

not correct, sorry. there are fully environmental friendly developers, stop baths and fixers readily available on the market.
with reard to digital chips, think blood diamonds. the rare minerals in digital imaging devices are mined, and sold to manufacturers by warlords, supporting their favorite sport - killing and torturing civilians - see C.A.R.

The main difference is Film (SLR) vs Computer. (DSLR)

The digital is much better, although a few would disagree. In the digital, you can check lighting conditions on your pics with your LCD display. With the SLR, you had to guess. The SLR had no ISO, only film speed. The DSLR has ISO, no film speed, which narrows down the lighting issues in the picture.

An old camera shop employee once told me that Film was equal to 12mp. Depending on the camera, 10 or 8mp is fabulous.

Digital pics are instant, Film is at least an hour away. There are many more differences.

Some folks never change and are SLR or die, just like the LP vs the CD. Most prefer the DSLR.

on the first, you are absolutely correct - you don't have to know anything, ignorance is rewarded with digital.

on the second, you are incorrect, given any digital imaging device in production today and for the forseeable future, a film print will far surpass a digital image.

on the third, you are incorrect. sales of vinyl have increased 600% in the past year. and it should be noted, these are new vinyl releases by major artists and bands, and... it is young people who are driving the market. pressing plants cannot keep up with the demand. also, the manufacture of turntables, over the past 5 years, has jumped tremendously from $300.00 to $500,000.00+.

digital anything is limited to ones and zeds. analog anything is limited only by the instrumentation required to read it. digital is fixed, analogue is plastic, and no pun intended.

If you are referring to the photo, it is my sound and light trigger. It features a delay and sensitivity control. For instance firing an air gun at a tomato requires a slight delay to show the pellet hitting the tomato. Bursting a balloon requires no delay. Sensitivity at maximum can trigger the flash by heavy breathing
