So sorry! I've never had this problem and I use my SD card all the time because to me it's so much more convenient than pulling out the USB cord. However, I will be extremely careful from now on!

You have no worries with your SD cards. they just slide in and make contact. With CF cards they plug into pins in the camera. Not a good design and you do have to be careful.

What's the advantage of a CF card over the SD card?

If the camera cannot be fixed for a reasonable price, check out canon loyalty program. Sorry for your misfortune.

I've spent many years doing antique pocket watch resteration. One day a friend of mine had bent pins in his camera. I used my needle point tweezers I use in watch repair and was able to straighten them with little effort.
Give it a try, what's to loose?

Take a laundry and put an arrow on the top of the card in the direction it goes in. You will never put it in the wrong way again. I bent the pins a few years back, it cost me $90 to fix. If you live in the chicago area there are few repair shops to use.

There is no problems with pin bending on your SD card, they are a totally different system than the CF cards. I always remove my SD cards and transfer images through a card reader as it is so much faster.

A CF card has a faster transfer rate than an SD card. The card itself is more durable when outside the camera also. And the bigger size makes them easier to handle and less likely to be dropped or lost. The downside? Their fragile 42 pin connection system, thats the system that allows them to transfer data so much quicker. The cards themselves are not fragile as they contain the slot (female) side of the connector, the pin (male) side is in the camera body, hence the expense and difficulty of the repair.

Sorry for your loss, hope you get your baby back on its feet quickly.
I used to swap my CF cards, now I DL them via cable, card don't leave camera. Heard too many horror stories about bent CF pins

I've read too many horror stories on it also and never take my card out anymore - USB cord and me are real good friends now. No loss in any pictures, plug in camera, download and go. Nice and easy to do.

I didn't know a card would go in the wrong way. Sometimes things are not universal. Like my card goes into the card slot on the computer one way, but needs to be flipped over to go into the camera's card slot.
I hope it can be fixed at a reasonable cost.

You might have a bad cable. Try a new one, they are not expensive.

Wow! I have shopped with Best Buy for years and have taken things back from time to time, including a printer, Canon flash, and camera bag, etc. I have never been charged a restocking fee.
