A new section for pictures, part 2

The settings for each image are recorded, and easily accessable. These typically are key as to why an image is good or bad, so this info MUST be included. For example: why is my image blurry? Settings give shutter speed of 1/2 sec, focal length of 100 mm. There is the answer, the shutter speed needs to by adjusted to 1/100 sec, change ISO or f/stop to achieve this. Other wise it is a guessing game as to why the image is bad.

I'm still trying to formulate the purpose and the set of rules for the new pictures section.

The core difference between the two sections as I see it should be entertainment vs. education.

- The existing pictures section should be mostly for showing off one's shots.
I think a good thing going here dont try to fixit like an running good you dont try to fix it or tinker with for it mit die.
- The new pictures section should be mostly for learning how to improve and for show-and-tell posts. Either asking why something specific in the photo didn't come out right, or explaining how something specific in the photo was achieved.

There will be some overlap, but the difference between the two sections should be clearly defined.

The main reason for creating the new pictures section is to make sure that posts with pictures of users seeking help with specifics of a shot don't get lost among the multitude of other pictures which get posted on the forum on a general basis.

Just to clarity. The difference between the two sections will not be (as was suggested elsewhere):
- Only positive comments vs. all honest critique.
- Editing vs. non-editing.
- Post-processing questions vs. shooting questions.

Initially, the set of rules for the new section was as follows:
Quote:
One solution I see is having a restrictive set of rules for the advice section.
Something like:
- Must state the settings used for taking the picture (ISO, aperture, shutter speed, any body presets).
- Must describe the lighting (sources, intensity, locations, weather, etc.).
- Must list the gear (body, lenses, etc.)
- Must ask specific questions about either improving the existing picture in post or about retaking the shot.

Any topic that is placed in the advice section without the required info/questions gets moved into the pictures section.
One solution I see is having a restrictive set of ... (show quote)

I'm going to relax this and drop the absolute requirement for describing the settings. It was pointed out that sometimes it's hard to recall them much later, and I agree. So we'll go with "should" instead of "must".

The core of the rules for the new section would be something like this.

You must either:
- Ask a specific question about fixing something specific you don't like about your photo.
- Post a description of a technique you used to achieve something specific in the photo.

I'm stressing specificity over and over because I would like to avoid vague posts like: "Here is a picture of my puppy. Please tell me what I could improve." So posts with general questions like "What do you think about this photo?" should be placed in the existing pictures section. The existing pictures section is for general questions and general critique.

By contrast, the new section should contain posts like (and I'm just making stuff up here to illustrate the point):
- Why is the background too bright while the subject is too dark?
- Why is the wrong subject/background in focus instead of the main subject?
- How to make sure the highlights in the "such and such" aren't clipped?
- Why is there bluish cast on the faces?
Or something like that.

The purpose of the new section is the educational component -- to help people improve on specifics (lighting, gear, techniques, framing).

Keeping all this in mind, I'm struggling with the name for the new section.

We need a name that clearly states the purpose of the new section, so that people don't confuse the two pictures sections.

Any suggestions?

Good idea. How about:
"Photos - C&C"
or maybe
"Photos - Educational"

The existing photos link could be changed to:
"Photos - Shared".

Already there seems to be confusion, as evidenced by suggestions for naming the different sections. The Administrator stated that the existing section would be for general critique and comments. The new section would be for specific questions regarding the posted pictures.

REALLY ? I wasn't confused till now !....

You were on the right track, see below. Why back track?

between rocco and jack in the box I think you should have what you need for the two sections.
In regards to the section with all the info....the answers should include the same stuff and still I think permission is necessary to download and change.

Admin, as several have commented your efforts to provide a quality forum are greatly appreciated. I like to invite c/c on all photos I post, because I am here to learn.

The new section you are talking about should have a name like "Comments, Criticism and Suggestions - Serious comments on Specific subjects".

Anyone posting there would expect the comments to be more pointed than those posting in the Pictures section. This might encourage replies to stay closer to the original topic.

Is it possible to display the rules at the top of the page when you choose the section so that users can be reminded of the purpose of the section? I see a one-line description under the title for each section on the home page. Maybe this could say something like "Post specific questions or Suggestions here. Please stay on topic."

I believe Rocco is on the right track. His ideas are descriptive and most should be able to follow. Bmac is also correct, there will be some innocent confusion and some willfull ignorence, but most of us want to make this a better site and will try to comply. As for those who draw attention to errors, they can be valuable if done with the right spirit and humor. As for myself, I try to make sure I'm doing the right thing. That's a fulltime job.

I also want to thank admin, this has to be a lot of work with small appreciation. I for one am delighted at the site, the members, and the amount of education I have discovered here.

My suggestions:
Picture (or Photo) Gallery or Showcase for the simple display of photos

Picture (or Photo) Evaluation or Analysis for the critique, commentary, dissection of photos

Thanks for your continued efforts to the site and the group.

I think that Rocco_7155's suggestion is a pretty good description on what Admin is trying to achieve.

I think there should be a skull and crossbones with a warning something like....
"Warning! All who post here, you're pics will be criticized!!!!" :-)

Seriously,I really like the idea.Too many people who really want help have seen their posts downgraded to something like "Hey where do you live? We should get together sometime!"
