Adobe has long had a policy of offering free or discounted upgrades to buyers who had purchased within 30 days of a new versions release, but NEVER over 30 days. And no other software provider offers free upgrades to new versions at all.
If a newer version offers significant improvements that you want, buy it. If it does not offer anything, don't buy it, you have a choice. Not sure what your issue is here. If you bought a Canon 60D just 3 months before they introduced the 70D would you be expecting them to replace your older model for free???? Obviously not.

I guess I have been lucky with software providers that offer free upgrades up to a year (non photographic software). Obviously we are talking apples and oranges regarding upgrading cameras as opposed to clicking on a button and downloading the latest version of a program having purchased the old one a few short months prior. That's my issue if I was not terribly clear!

Adobe has forgotten all of us who are not pro photographers. They built their firm on the backs of all of us, pros and amateurs alike, and now that they believe we're hooked they thumb their noses at us little guys.

As I enter my "golden" years I'm not sure to what extent I will be able to support my gear addiction. With Obama-care or lack thereof, rising home insurance costs, etc., we just don't see a good future for those of us working stiffs.

I have used Lightroom and PS for a number of years now dating back to LR 1 and PS 2 but have now stopped my regular Adobe cash donations with LR 4 and CS5. I'm not inclined to continue LR as I don't want to get stuck down the road unable to use my software or access my catalogs because I would rather spend money on food than contribute to Adobe-care. I have been trying various alternatives and hope soon to land on something reliable.

I purchased PSE12! from Costco recently for $79.00 and uninstalled my PSE11 for my computer. I then put my PSE11 on EBay and sold it yesterday for over $60.00. I did the same last year with PSE10. It's worth the trouble, at least I think so.

I love it - I think that is totally fitting! Karma in action!

I have budgeted $9.99/mo for photography. Thank you, Adobe. I have everything including the latest upgrades to Lightroom, Photoshop and more. I have the best gear. Thank you, Nikon. I have my health. Thank you, parents.

Surely there must be something I can complain about. Please help me. Surely, someone can suggest something.

How about complaining about that empty suit in the White House?

Absolutely. No one is in business to trade dollars. Adobe is entitled to profits and, being the capitalist that I am, I don't fault their desire for growth/profits. I do fault being led down the path of using their products, choosing to update or not, and then have a subscription based product shoved down my throat. Had this been the case from the outset I would not have chosen this product line.

I don't like this anymore than I would being forced to pay for gasoline whether I used it or not.

For those who don't mind this method of distribution, it is after all your choice. There's no animosity on my part. But my concern remains, will Adobe ultimately force higher and higher user fees upon us?

I am as much as a capitalist as one can be, but part of capitalism is the proper treatment of loyal customers. Loyal customers beget repeat business and recommendations. Taking it in the shorts begets no more business. Certainly it is not unreasonable to expect an upgrade when a software product is upgraded shortly after the purchase. On the other side of the coin, if the market is happily abused then it encourages the abusers. Let's face it, there are actually people that believe and support Barry in that those on the left side of the bell curve need someone to support also. Anyway, this is getting a bit off course and I'm out of here.

Adobe often offers upgrades for Photoshop. You can choose to buy them or ignore them. No one will win a debate on what is "reasonable."

I bought Photoshop 5 (not CS5) way back in 1998. It had the magnetic lasso, so cool! It served my needs until 2011, and then I upgraded by paying full price for CS5: over $600. I upgraded again, to Photoshop CC this year, for $9.95/month. Getting Lightroom and Bridge as part of the deal was a welcome bonus.

I've never understood this criticism of business as if actually (gasp!) making a profit was somehow evil...

It becomes evil when the profit becomes outlandish.

I purchased Photoshop Elements 11 three months prior to the upgrade to 12 and they tell me that I do not qualify for a free upgrade. I will upgrade, but it will never be to another one of Adobe's products. :(

They have rules like everyone else does. If you can not follow and like them, do what you ant to do.

Actually it is evil. It is getting more for something than it is worth. Ideally everything would be traded at its value. We are so ingrained in our system like monkeys with their hand in the gourd (they could get free by letting go of the bait by opening their fist, the fist won't fit through the whole but they won't because they will lose the bait they want, thus they/we are trapped)-we are unable to ever even consider an alternative. Adobe is getting particularly cutthroat about it, cutting out the little guys, the beginners who can't afford their big packages and now you evidently can't even buy from them but only rent. Rent is a particular evil where you rip some body off over and over again and never give what is being sold. "All companies exist to make a profit" of course, but just imagine that their might be other ways of doing things in an advanced civilization. You can't.

I know ... there are other alternatives ... I use ACDSee Pro 6 ... it does all I need, and quite well.

Perfect Photo Suites 8 is coming out the end of this month. It does A LOT. The stand alone is only $79. The public beta of 8 is free with NO restrictions. If you like it and pre-purchase it they will give you 7.5 free. Go to: ononesoftware.com What do you have to lose? It has layers, the cloning tool, erase tool, replace background tool, get rid of unwanted objects tool (my names for them), and an unbelievable effects panel plus so much more and they all work like magic. Check it out.

Adobe has upgraded Elements consistently in September or October for the last several years. This year's upgrade to 12 added very little in functionality and actually took away a few things. It did not upgrade to 64 bit use in Windows, but did for Apples.

The only reason to need an upgrade is if you need a new ACR level for a new camera model.

??? I have Elements 10 and use it on a 64 bit system, surely Elements 12 will do the same.
