White balance filters are used for film, not digital. Most films are designed specifically for daylight and some for indoor (tungsten) light. Even so, color balancing is often needed for proper printing.
All filters (except clear) work by reducing the level of some colors (or all colors) reaching your sensor or film.
With digital your best option is to shoot raw and work on the colors in your computer.
