That's ok for occasional use but I am more concerned with full size on location shooting than emailed images, I will have from 100-2500 to work with
Then answer to that is to carry an external hard drive with you. I have a 350GB hard drive that is physically small. Prices for external hard drives keep coming down so they are quite accessible these days.
The other advantage of my netbook is that it has three USB ports. To call on SKYPE I use a mousephone that takes up one port leaving me two to plug in anything else I want to use.

Good reply, in fact I will be getting one to supplement the laptop, but what of the processing power of tablets compared to laptops (NOT the high end laptops as most people don't have them) , comments appreciated

Obviously not as fast as a dedicated laptop but for
my purposes more than sufficient. If you are doing a great deal of detailed editing then the small screen size might possibly be a drawback. I don't profess to be a photographer so my editing is fairly basic I suppose. Still, my friends don't write back to me and comment that anything is very obvious.
Just to give you an idea I'm attaching examples. If you enlarge the second photo the editing becomes very obvious but viewed at normal size it's acceptable.
Oh shoot, I forgot to store the original but I see that even doing that doesn't make it any larger. How can I do that?

Hahaha I do that some times
OK, I think I got it right this time but I had to re-edit the shot. This was done on my netbook and took me about 15 minutes.

Is there any reason why I would need a tablet (real question)
I have a laptop for in car / on location, rarely if ever have I seen a photographer with a tablet, I think because of the almost non existent storage, so is there a reason why I would need one
This is one area I am not familiar with, so thanks for the input
I have toyed with the idea of buying an IPad but the more research I do, it just does not fulfill my needs do to the following reasons:
* I shoot Raw with my D800 or D7100 that require a lot of space and most tablets don't have the capacity to store the amount of pics I take
* Most tablets do not have enough ram memory to install Photoshop that use for editing. Although I do most of my editing in my computer home, I like to do some editing in my laptop while in the field.
* Most tablets use video cards that will not render the image that I need when revising them at night.
Maybe I will surrender and buy one just to use it to read books so all I need the one from Amazon which is supposed to be better than Nook.

This is why I have decided not to get one, I have a laptop for work when out and a PC for at home, and a great phone so I see no reason other than keeping up with people I don't want to keep up with for owning and wasting money on a tablet.
And, as I loath nothing more than reading anything other than a real paper book or magazine, turning the pages and the feel that eliminates a book reader.
I've been thinking about one for tethering so I can review focus in the field.

Check out the "Microsoft Surface Pro"..it's a full on computer the size of a tablet.. It has a single USB port, so I bought a 4 port USB hub and now I can run a Internet stick, card reader, mouse etc, plug in a printer..it does everything but yodel but I'm sure it has a yodel switch hidden somewhere... it really is a great piece of kit...

Don't use a laptop myself, store on memory cards till I get home to edit on my large iMac monitor, laptop screens too small to do any real editing. Use my iPad with my CamRanger for focusing, depth of field, and composition. Also can listen to tunes when I want and pretty much anything else I need to do on the road without having to lug around a laptop and hard drive.

But the thread was for people like me wanting to process "in the field", as I work there
If you have a computer and don't mind carrying it around then no need for a notebook. I do not have a laptop but do have an iPad. I have found it extremely useful when traveling. When traveling I shoot in Raw + jpg. At the end of each day I download to my iPad. I can do quick edits (keep or delete) by viewing the jogs. This also helps me decide if I got the images I want or do I need another go at it. I have loaded over 2000 images (each in raw + jpg) onto my iPad with more room to spare. I don't even try to do any post processing. Couldn't if I wanted to. That's a (pleasurable) task that I take on when I'm home again I front of a full size monitor. So.....iPad is essential for me. Compact, light weight, quick reviewing, and back up.

So I think the answer is
PC........ As yet no equal for editing other than Mac
Laptop ......... Editing on the move
Tablet ......... Viewing and deletion but not for workflow
