Is there any reason why I would need a tablet (real question)

I have a laptop for in car / on location, rarely if ever have I seen a photographer with a tablet, I think because of the almost non existent storage, so is there a reason why I would need one

This is one area I am not familiar with, so thanks for the input

You don't need a tablet if you have a laptop. I have a 10" netbook which I use to back up my photos when on a long trip. I can review them each day and possibly do some editing.
I have seen people using tablets to take photos recently and thought how stupid they looked!! I stood behind one the other day, I think he was Japanese, I couldn't see anything on the screen due to reflections so how he coped holdind it above his head I don't know.
So in my opinion don,t waste money on a tablet when your laptop does what you want.

The reason I think we may want the answer is because a laptop is of course a large clumsy item when out, as you see I use a laptop and printer when out, I think the lack of storage and processing power of tablets will be soooooo limiting, but perhaps I am wrong.

I accept that you can "cloud" store but that is no good if you are in a no signal area, also I assume (though you should never assume) that editing on a tablet will be exceedingly slow

I have a 10" netbook with window it's exactly the same size as my wife's tablet, a bit thicker though.
Mine is a Samsung N110 which is quite fast when I do PP and has stacks if storage, and with Wifi available in many spots now it's never long before you get on line when you want.
I bought mine off ebay for £150 a couple of years ago and really like it, there are lots of similar one still available for about £150 (used)

I carry a Panasonic TZ30 and I have a 10" HP Netbook that goes with me when I travel and I can load my photos on to it and edit them and then e-mail them so I don't have to wait until the end of my trip to let my friends know where I am and what I have seen. I also use it to call my friends via SKYPE. I really don't see that I need a tablet.

That's ok for occasional use but I am more concerned with full size on location shooting than emailed images, I will have from 100-2500 to work with

Hi GB, I have the same camera linked to my Samsung 10" netbook. When I need to save power on the TZ I switch the GPS off and record the location on the netbook or my phone.
This setup suits me fine and have been using it for years when on a long trip.

I don't even bother with the GPS. The fact that I can upload my photos on to the netbook in to a specific file that says where I was, is enough. I really don't need the coordinates. My photos will die when I do so I don't suppose that anyone in the future will care.

A tablet certainly will be no use to you then. Upto 2500 photos woul be at least 40-50 gb so the HDD will have to be big enough on a Netbook, otherwise it's just the time it takes you to do it.

That's what I thought, though with RAM as cheap as chips (excuse the pun), why they don't increase the capacity on board to 512 and offer greater external storage, or, would that then detract from the reason of having a tablet.

Darn good question JR.

I do my photographic work on an ipad, for convenient on the road basic editing and management of photos.
The ipad has very user friendly and inexpensive editing programs -- in my case, Snapseed and Photogene. The editing programs do basic, simple stuff and do it well especially if you want to put your feet up and really want see what you've got and make basic adjustments -- like levelling the horizon (LOL).

At home on the PC, I can import into the big guns like Lightroom and Corel, if necessary,
and work away to my hearts content.

It's all a matter of need and.ease. I like having the choice.

Thank you, I am now beginning to see that we have three real options in order of need

1 PC
2 Laptop
3 Tablet

I recently doubled the memory of my netbook quite cheaply. In any case, once I am at home, everythin g gets transferred to my desktop and backed up on to an external hard drive.
